From Bulk Buys to Big Savings: Is This Budget-Friendly Retailer Cheaper Than ALDI?

Feeling the cost-of-living pinch? You're not alone. Many Aussies are looking for smart ways to stretch their hard-earned money, and one name that's been making waves is Costco.

You heard it right – the beloved American supermarket chain has made its way Down Under with 15 stores scattered all over the country, and it's quickly becoming the go-to destination for savvy Aussie shoppers looking to save big on their weekly grocery bills.

But Costco is not your typical supermarket. It's capturing the hearts and wallets of Australians, helping them navigate through tough times and make their dollars go further.

What sets Costco apart from the usual suspects like Woolies, Coles, or ALDI? Let's dive in and find out!

What sets Costco apart is that it's not your typical grocery store. It's a wholesale wonderland where you can score deals by buying in bulk. Imagine getting more bang for your buck, both in terms of quantity and savings!

It's like a doomsday prepper's paradise (minus the panic), where you can stock up on everything from food to toiletries to booze and so much more – all at reduced prices.

With Costco, you can say goodbye to those frequent trips to the store and hello to stocking up on essentials that last longer, all while keeping more money in your pocket.

Plus, the thrill of discovering unique finds and exclusive products that you won't find elsewhere adds an element of excitement to the shopping experience.

Now, we know what you might be thinking – a store that charges an upfront $60 annual membership fee? It's understandable to feel a tad apprehensive. But according to several savvy shoppers, that membership fee is worth its weight in gold!

Imagine saving over $500 on your grocery bill! That's exactly what one savvy mum recently shared on Facebook, and her haul from Costco was nothing short of impressive.

With ample freezer space, this smart shopper stocked up on essentials like mince, pork, and beef, all divided into convenient 1kg lots and frozen for future meals.

But that's not all – her haul included snacks for her kids' school lunches, bulk pantry products, toilet paper, poppers, water, cheese, fruit, and veggies. In fact, it was enough to keep her kids fed for a good portion of the school term!

When she crunched the numbers, she found that if she had done a similar shop at Woolies or Coles, it would have cost her a whopping $1160. Even at ALDI, it would have been $985 in comparison. Talk about massive savings!

Costco's bulk-buying concept allows you to stock up on everyday essentials and treats at prices that won't break the bank. Plus, the convenience of freezing and storing items in bulk means fewer trips to the store and more time and money saved in the long run.

And it's not just snacks and pantry items that are a hit – another mum discovered the value of the supermarket's meat products. With high-quality meats available in bulk, she found that she could make her budget go further without compromising on quality.

Want to know if Costco is really the money-saving paradise it's claimed to be? Well, one journalist decided to put it to the test.

I am a member of Costco.
However I have only attended and purchased on 2 occasions.
I have not found them to be cheaper overall on a price per unit basis.
In fact I have found Coles, Woolworths and Aldi to be cheaper on most items.

I haven't shopped at Costco for at least 5 years. My nearest one is an almost two hour drive away. We used to go about four times a year, make a day of it, have lunch out, shop leisurely, poking into every section and noting anything worthy of future consideration. It was a good savings even if it was for only two of us, now there's only me it's a different ball game. I wouldn't use enough to make the round trip worthwhile, I'm still using the washing powder, dishwashing liquid, shampoo and conditioner, body wash and spray and wipe from my last visit all that time ago! ;) ;)

There's a new Costco getting built about 15min away from me. I've already decided I won't be doing my full week's shopping there. Too much bulk buying, but I will check it out.
I've been to a Costco in America. We were allowed in because our friend had paid her yearly subscription and because we were tourists, Costco let us enter free. Wasn't that nice of them
In America, there's a whole range of pharmaceutical products ie. higher % of cortisone creams than we buy over the counter.
Massive amounts of bulk items everywhere.
I came away with non bulk items. I bought a select few Christmas decorations.
I am looking forward to seeing if it's similar when my local one opens.

I do not like Costco, why pay a fee to shop there? Also you have to buy most items in bulk!!! Shopped once with a friend will never go back there!!!

I remember over 40 years ago in Brisbane we had Jack the Slasher. Buying goods straight off the pallets and you picked up a black marker pen on the way into the store and had to write the price on your goods as you went. I thought that was great with a young family to feed.

Costco is a co-operative (or membership club) which provides SOME price advantages to its members by linking its prices to bulk purchases. When it is written that you will be saved to necessity of visiting the supermarket so often, what is really meant is that Costco requires that you purchase in bulk to obtain price benefits. Perhaps that is just as well, as Costco has so few outlets that most members have to travel from far and wide to visit its stores.
It should also be noted that Costco is a US based organisation so that a great deal of its stock is produced either in USA or in a USA influenced country. It's products are often significantly out of kilter with Australian culture.
Before committing to costly membership or attending one of it's stores, I recommend that interested people check out it's published catalogue for a generalised indicator of stocks and prices.

I remember over 40 years ago in Brisbane we had Jack the Slasher. Buying goods straight off the pallets and you picked up a black marker pen on the way into the store and had to write the price on your goods as you went. I thought that was great with a young family to feed.
Jack The Slasher - one of the Great Disappearing Acts Of The 80s! I remember going to their brand-new store at Inala 1979, panicking as to whether my vehicle would still have its wheels afterward. My main memory was of watching dodgy looking Housos furtively looking sideways while using the dodgy Textas to scribble prices on their items (and wondering how many were accurate!) in the darkness of the warehouse (no feature-lighting, folks!) and stacked pallets full of splinters and jagged metal brackets. Once was enough...
The percentage of savings made really didn't make up for the extra effort involved, and I really was tempting Fate parking there.

If it wasn't for fuel, I would not be a member. However, I travel weekly between Canberra and Wagga Wagga and what I save on fuel by fuelling up at Costco, covers more than my membership.

I also purchase the Costco brand of bulk toilet paper. As much as it pains me to say this, it is better quality than Australia's top brands and the rolls are larger and goe further for a lower price.

Most of the meat is very expensive, except for mince and some of the pork. I also buy their big trays of eggs and their dinner rolls.

Most of their fruit and vegetable is overpriced, except for washed potatoes. I purchase 5 kg bags for $6.99, which works out at $1.40 per kg.

Their pizzas are good value for a family meal.

I’ve been a few times but not a fan of Costco. It’s handy if you’re having a party or other event but not for regular shopping I recon. In fact the Times I have been I’ve spent more because of picking up stuff that was a bit different and definitely didn’t need lol

My son was a member when he lived in Melbourne but now he lives in Cairns there is no Costco or Aldi he & his wife have to make do with Coles or Woolies. When in Melbourne he did buy a beautiful engagement ring from Costco & he took me on a trip there also but apart from their jewellery department I was unimpressed by the store.

I signed up last year for the Fuel alone. Buying in bulk is not a great option for me as I live alone and I did a quick walkthrough at Christmas time to see the decorations and had to leave in a hurry - that was going to cost me plenty as I adore Christmas but definately worth a look at for party time foods.

By the time I drive to nearest Costco the price of the petrol used outweighs any savings and as I live alone buying in bulk is not the best option!!!
Aldi still is tops by me!

We can almost say our local store is a Costco, so just for the petrol alone the membership is worth it to us. We do have a lot of storage space and a very big freezer so we go every couple of months and do a bulk buy of meat, frozen and canned goods. Also, I have been known to drop in there quickly on a petrol run to grab a BBQ chicken and salad for under $20, why would I want to go elsewhere.
