What does it mean to be an ethical professional?
That’s the question the Governance Institute of Australia was trying to address with its Ethics Index report—and now we have the answer.
According to the report, real estate agents officially have the least trusted occupation in Australia and emergency workers like firefighters and ambulance drivers have been named as the most trusted.
Overall, Australians value ethics more than ever, with 54 per cent of respondents ranking the rising cost of living as the top ethical issue in the country.
Cybersecurity breaches, privacy protection and the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence were also at the forefront of people’s minds.
So which industries were ranked the most and least trustworthy?
Aside from firefighters and ambulance services, one of the most trusted professions included nurses and general practitioners, while the least trusted were payday lenders and aged-care providers organisations were placed at the bottom of the list.
Within the public service and government sector, politicians were ranked right at the bottom when it comes to trustworthiness.
And when it comes to breakthrough technology, like artificial intelligence and embryo experimentation, Australians found these issues to be ethically difficult to manage.
As far as media goes, free-to-air TV was seen as the most ethical option.
Under education, the top spot went to primary and secondary school teachers, while private schools and private colleges were ranked lower.
Overall, Governance Institute Chief Executive Megan Motto noted that the importance Australians place on ethics remains at an 'all-time high'.
‘Cyber security breaches, privacy protection and the increasing use of [Artificial Intelligence] are also at the forefront of people’s minds, indicating the desire for stronger protections and regulations in this space.’
It’s worth noting that the survey results reflect just a snapshot of opinions out there.
And while a job’s level of trustworthiness is of key importance, your opinion of the trustworthiness of different professions is ultimately up to you.
So, when you meet someone in an unfamiliar occupation, always bring an open mind—and an open heart!
Who knows, maybe you’ll develop an even stronger appreciation of a particular field than you ever expected!
What do you consider the most and least trustworthy professions, and why? Are there any professions The Governance Institute of Australia missed in their report? Let us know in the comments below!
