Find out which Australian jobs are the most trustworthy—and which ones aren’t!

What does it mean to be an ethical professional?

That’s the question the Governance Institute of Australia was trying to address with its Ethics Index report—and now we have the answer.

According to the report, real estate agents officially have the least trusted occupation in Australia and emergency workers like firefighters and ambulance drivers have been named as the most trusted.

Overall, Australians value ethics more than ever, with 54 per cent of respondents ranking the rising cost of living as the top ethical issue in the country.

Cybersecurity breaches, privacy protection and the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence were also at the forefront of people’s minds.

So which industries were ranked the most and least trustworthy?

Aside from firefighters and ambulance services, one of the most trusted professions included nurses and general practitioners, while the least trusted were payday lenders and aged-care providers organisations were placed at the bottom of the list.

Within the public service and government sector, politicians were ranked right at the bottom when it comes to trustworthiness.

And when it comes to breakthrough technology, like artificial intelligence and embryo experimentation, Australians found these issues to be ethically difficult to manage.

As far as media goes, free-to-air TV was seen as the most ethical option.

Under education, the top spot went to primary and secondary school teachers, while private schools and private colleges were ranked lower.

Overall, Governance Institute Chief Executive Megan Motto noted that the importance Australians place on ethics remains at an 'all-time high'.

‘Cyber security breaches, privacy protection and the increasing use of [Artificial Intelligence] are also at the forefront of people’s minds, indicating the desire for stronger protections and regulations in this space.’

It’s worth noting that the survey results reflect just a snapshot of opinions out there.

And while a job’s level of trustworthiness is of key importance, your opinion of the trustworthiness of different professions is ultimately up to you.

So, when you meet someone in an unfamiliar occupation, always bring an open mind—and an open heart!

Who knows, maybe you’ll develop an even stronger appreciation of a particular field than you ever expected!

Key Takeaways

  • The Governance Institute of Australia released their Ethics Index report revealing Australia’s least and most trusted jobs.
  • Real estate agents are seen as the least trusted profession in Australia, while emergency services workers, such as fire workers and ambulance services, are considered the most trusted and ethical.

Could never truly trust a politician.
Real estate agents are ok, but it's quite coincidental that when you're about to make an offer on a property listed for months, suddenly their colleague had just shown it to another party too. Let the games begin!
Any big corporation is not trustworthy.

What does it mean to be an ethical professional? Loyalty to the person who pays and respects you!!

I agree real estate agents are pretty shonky, and their commissions are ridiculous.
I once got an appraisal for a property that was $60,000 under what I wantedm. He was old me I had was dreaming.
I hired a photographer who even downloaded the pictures to the sell yourself website I had fhisen

Whoops, sorry wrong button - the website I had chosen, photos ($200) the website charged $700,
It cost $25 for the paperwork from REIWA Advertised open house for the Saturday, sold the house on the Friday for $5,000 more than I asked. $65,000 more than the agent said.
Have never used an agent since and have saved myself hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years in commissions on 23 houses in all

Real Estate Agents and car salespeople are traditionally bottom of the heap. But they pale into insignificance when compared to the rotten bunch of politicians we have. Talk about noses in the trough!! Promise anything to get their votes and deliver diddly squat, time and time again. Australia is broken and bleeding but we can't blame Real Estate Agents, car salespeople, telemarketers, mechanics etc etc.....

Why do real estate agents try to tell you what your home is worth you are the only one who should decide not. Them they are only there to sell.

Lots of people have no idea what their home is worth.
My advise, if you don't want to sell it yourself, get 3 or 4 separate appraisals.
Some agents under quote, hoping for a quick sale, others over quote to get you to sign with them and then will tell you a couple of weeks later that the market won't meet that price and want you to drop it.
Compare sold prices on real estate.com, with comparable properties to yours in your area.
Negotiate their commission. Don't use settlement agents that they suggest, they are usually on a kickback, just Google conveyancers in your area.

Politicians are worst of the worst they are bankrupting our country , selling it to foreigners and putting all Australians at risk.

I class Politian's below Real-estate crooks.
What is a politian?

does this mean those surveyed think celebrity social media influencers are ethical? I assume by free to air, it means the ABC, certainly no commercial TV news that I would consider ethical. Especially the 7 network or Karl Stefanovic.

I thought the 2nd posting was to correct the spelling error & punctuation errors. 😊
