Fill up your tank as petrol prices plummet this Easter!

As the Easter holiday approaches, Australians are getting a welcome surprise at the bowser, with petrol prices taking a dip across most capital cities.

This bit of good news comes just in time for families and individuals planning their Easter road trips, but don't get too comfortable—experts warn this relief at the pump may be fleeting.

The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) has reported that all capitals, with the exception of Canberra, have seen a drop in fuel prices.

In Sydney, for instance, regular unleaded petrol has fallen to 190.5 cents per litre, while diesel prices have also decreased to 200.2 cents per litre.

This trend is echoed in other cities, with Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth all experiencing falling prices.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury advises that now is the optimal time to fill up.

'For families going on an Easter road trip, they should fill up now before travelling for the long weekend,' he said.

‘There is currently a 55-cent gap between the cheapest and most expensive service stations in Sydney.’

Here's a snapshot of the current average prices across Australia's capital cities:
  • Adelaide: 192.3 cents per litre and falling
  • Brisbane: 202.0 cents per litre and falling
  • Melbourne: 203.4 cents per litre and falling
  • Perth: 180.1 cents per litre and falling
  • Sydney: 190.5 cents per litre and falling
  • Canberra: 208.7 cents per litre and stable
  • Darwin: 191.7 cents per litre and stable
  • Hobart: 198.6 cents per litre and stable

For those hitting the road, it's not just about finding the cheapest petrol. Ensuring your vehicle is in tip-top shape can also help save money.

Thats not a drop in price, it's just less profit for them and the government, 10% gst on 1.90 is still better than 1.20, in Guildford it's 1.77 nearly all the time. We've got our own reserves, use them instead of sending it overseas, our government sucks the big one.

I can’t keep track of petrol prices. Where I live in Perth, they go up and down like a yo-yo. Also the prices can vary depending on the suburb.

Those figures for Perth are incorrect for today 28/03/2024.
According to PetrolSpy the low for regular unleaded is $1.81 and high is $2.09
Average across Perth is $1.95 per litre

We don't all live in capital cities and we don't all get the benefit of price drops for petrol or anything else. For instance, prices for groceries , or so we are told, cannot go down not only because of the unpredictability of weather for the farmers, but also because everything has to be delivered from the city which means petrol/diesel prices are included in the end price.
