Today I received an email purporting to be from Facebook saying my account was “suspended”. As I cancelled my account earlier in the week, I doubt that I will be troubled by any suspension. The “from” address was clearly a scam one. No identifying details for my previous account were given. I joined Facebook only about 10 days ago but I became more concerned about the security of my information, so I deleted the account after having it only a week. Is that some kind of record?

received a very convincing email the other day. Really great great attempt - except for one thing the letter 5 was written in larger font. I am pretty good after learning a lot of tricks from just listening, reading and talking to banks etc but this one nearly had me going... then noticed the 5.

One thing you can do to protect your personal information and that is not to put the information into the system in the first place. If you are must put something into the system then make up the information and put things in that are not correct. :Eg Date of birth: "yesterday" "Monday" "2050 Bc" etc etc.

I don't normally put my correct phone number or date of birth in unless I have to for sites like this, Centrelink etc.

These scams are becoming extinct in the US
This is because scammers know the FBI and its secret service will investigate and prosecute scammers in their own country.
Our Government will not prosecute anyone overseas mealy just send an email to the police in the host country
The scammers know this and will continue on with immunity until our Government acts

There was a This wasn’t me . I got 3 within minutes on 29/12/24
Then 2 more for Brisbane a few days later. 3 /1/25
I am not on Facebook nor use a browser ,
So how do they get my information?
There is probably a scammers network where they pass on information so as to have a wider "audience" to scam

It’s plain and simple!
If you click on any of these emails a willingly hand over personal details then you are an idiot and deserve to lose every cent you have!

I don’t have anything to do with Facebook thank goodness.
It's not just Facebook, it's all social networks plus your email accounts, everyone that is a member here has to have an email which can easily get hacked if you happen to click on the wrong things.
Plus your bank could get hacked through no fault of your own like it did me recently.
There are so many hackable places, search Google and click on a link, it could be a virus and take over your phone and/or your computer!

Dark Web?

Yeah... about 12 mths ago, my Facebook and other on line social accounts were hacked. Caused me no end of grief when they then gained access to bank records ... Thankfully I picked it up before I lost everything, but it means I will not trust Facebook or other social accounts, and that limits my social contact and some local information.
How does anyone on FB get access to Bank Accounts? Those accounts have nothing to do with FB.

Absolute rubbish! Did Trump tell you that?

In the United States, the number of cybercrime incidents, including online fraud, has increased significantly in the past few years, from around 467,000 in 2019 to more than 880,000 in 2023. Accordingly, the monetary losses caused by cyber criminals have also seen a spike from 3.5 billion U.S. dollars to 12.5 billion U.S. dollars in the same measured period.

I think most of these emails are coming from the latest recruits from "Scam School". I am sure these people all do to the same scam courses and then just download scamming templates that they adjust to try and trick their potential victims. I wonder how much these people are paying to do these "How to scam" courses.
I think their first lesson is being scammed by their teacher........I bet they are outraged by such dishonesty

Excellent advice! It’s a pity we need to resort to giving false information, but with all those scammers out there it is our best option.
Unfortunately, scammers will take advantage of any information we as a trusting society unwittingly supply and use that information for personal gain.

And still they come! This one arrived today, headed 2024-2025 ATO Income Tax Return Adjustment Notification.

Dear myGov user,

Please address important matters related to your ATO Tax Income by visiting the ATO website or using the myGov portal below to manage your tax affairs promptly :

Review myGov Portal

Regards,

ATO Team

First, the 2024-2025 tax return is not due yet! How can it be adjusted??
Second, there is no such thing as “ATO Team”.
Third, “Dear myGov user” does not identify the recipient. Correspondence from the ATO provides identifying details of the recipient.
Fourth, “ATO Tax Income” is a meaningless phrase.

Then (surprise, surprise) you are told to click on a link where no doubt you will be asked for your banking details. They mention that you can visit the ATO website (no link is provided, of course) but then give you a link that is so much more convenient to click on.

Use that Delete button!!
