Coffee lovers beware: You may be ruining your health by drinking coffee at this time of day

Do you love starting your day with a hot cup of coffee? You're not alone. Many of us here at the Seniors Discount Club are guilty of this morning ritual.

However, did you know that there may be a downside to drinking coffee first thing in the morning – especially on an empty stomach?

Olivia Hedlund, a gut expert, and the Functional Nutritional Therapist behind Livingwell warned that drinking coffee first thing in the morning can be detrimental to your health.

She added that the caffeine hit can cause ‘major issues’ for your gut and hormones.

This is because the acidity in coffee can be tough on an empty stomach. It also causes your body to go into ‘high-stress mode’, which ends up upsetting your hormones.

‘If you drink coffee first thing on an empty stomach, stop what you’re doing and listen,’ the gut expert said.

‘Coffee is not only acidic (so it’s hard on our stomachs in the morning), but it literally causes our bodies to go into a stress response to shoot out cortisol, and to put us in a fight or flight state.’

She said that the stress response is what causes jitters and palpitations after drinking coffee. It’s also what gives us that caffeine high – you know, that feeling that makes us feel like we can conquer the world.

However, that good feeling doesn’t last very long and takes a toll on your body – especially for women, and for people with hormonal imbalances or gut issues.

Coffee can also cause hormonal acne, which can be troublesome to deal with.

Ms Hedlund admitted that she used to drink multiple cups of coffee on an empty stomach, but then she would get hormonal acne and wonder why that kept happening.

‘It’s because your body is stressed out. Have something small before you have a coffee, make it your goal. I promise you will notice a difference,’ Ms Hedlund explained.

Aside from coffee, here are some of the top gut disruptors that might be affecting your health:
  • Refined sugar and processed foods
  • Glyphosate and pesticides
  • Chronic stress
  • Oral contraception
  • Environmental toxins
  • Household chemicals
Instead of having coffee in the morning, Ms Hedlund recommends eating gelatine gummies, eggs, raw dairy, berries or some stewed fruit with apples, pears, or berries first before making your brew.

She also gave top tips to promote healthy hormones in your body:
  • Take adrenal cocktails. You can make these by blending four ounces of orange juice, four ounces of aloe juice (or coconut water!), coconut cream, and sea salt.
  • Switch out coffee for healthier alternatives, such as dandelion root. Dandelion root helps lift your energy without the added ‘stress’ hormone and lowers your risk of caffeine addiction.
  • Take walks after each meal.
  • Increase your matcha intake. Matcha is another great alternative to coffee because it has less chance of giving you that jittery feeling.
  • If you lead an active lifestyle, switch to low-intensity workouts like walking, or hot yoga.
  • Eat fruits within one hour of waking up, this will give you the energy you need to start your day right!

  • Eating something before you drink coffee can help to reduce the impacts on your health.
  • If you're struggling with hormone issues or gut problems, then cutting back on coffee may be a good idea.

I have been told by a few Italians to have a full glass of water before my first coffee in the morning to line my stomach. Not that I remember to do that before my first cup 😂

Before a cancer operation in 2012, I had a coffee, app once a week since then I have only had one cup of tea. and now only drink coffee. Actually now I don't like the taste of tea and don't drink the water where I live tastes bloody awful.

I swap. I drink coffee for a few months then suddenly even the smell turns my stomach so I change to tea. Tea does me well enough for a few months when I suddenly start fancying a coffee again. So it goes, round and round. I'm currently on tea! :)
