Caught on tape: Shopper physically assaults IGA employee over bag check

Violence rarely solves anything. More often than not, it makes things worse. Choosing to talk and understand each other is always a better way forward.

Unfortunately, a recent altercation at a local IGA shows just how quickly things can escalate when we forget this simple truth.

Recently, a video footage captured a woman in workout attire attacking a supermarket worker as he tried to inspect her bag.

This incident unfolded at the Silver Sands IGA in Mandurah, south of Perth, near 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday.

The woman tried to exit through a restricted door when a male staff member allegedly asked her to show the contents of her bag.

The CCTV video showed the moment when the employee took hold of the woman’s bag as she attempted to exit the store.

In response, the woman can be seen quickly re-entering the store, hitting the man on the back of his head twice, and then perceived to be shouting at the staff.

The altercation over the bag continued until a concerned shopper intervened, trying to calm the situation.

The dispute was resolved when two more store employees assisted their colleague, allowing the woman to collect her bag and exit the store.

The Mandurah Police are now actively investigating the matter.

Anyone with pertinent information, especially about the woman's identity, is encouraged to report it to Crime Stoppers.

Violence against retail workers in Australia

Two of Australia’s leading retail organisations, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA), have raised alarms about the escalating violence towards retail employees.

ARA CEO Paul Zahra commented on the persisting difficulties faced by employees, saying, ‘Customer aggression has been an ongoing challenge for frontline staff.’

Meanwhile, SDA National Secretary Gerard Dwyer highlighted the value of the retail workforce, expressing: ‘These workers should not be abused simply for doing their job and ensuring shoppers get the food they need and the other essentials of life.’

Following over 3,000 reported incidents of threats, violence, and abuse against its staff in the past year, Woolworths is ramping up its security provisions.

The supermarket plans to enhance its CCTV systems, introduce two-way radio headsets, and provide virtual reality-based aggression training.

Through a collaboration with Sonder, they’re launching an app granting staff continuous access to health experts and safety resources.

In addition, Woolworths is working alongside the government to push for legislative reforms that further safeguard retail employees.

She certainly should be charged with assault, what a pos to react that way but on the other hand, whilst employees are allowed to check shoppers bags, they are not allowed to physically touch them so maybe employees need a refresher re: that.

What a disgrace. She might have had something to hide to carry on like she did. I feel so sad for the employee. He was only doing his job. The lady was downright rude.

Just a few issues here.

"She was drugged affected". That's a bit judgmental there. Did anybody give her a blood test or a DUDIT assessment to determine if she was? We will never know.

The important 30 seconds of footage PRIOR to what ensued is vital before anyone can make a qualified statement on the subsequent events. Looking at the footage, the shop assistant technically committed a common assault on the woman by trying to wrestle her bag from her possession. Which comes to the next question. Did the shop assistant attempt to conduct a bag search by placing his hands INSIDE the bag? Another case of common assault.

As for security staff, they may as well have cardboard cutouts at the exits. Their powers are NO GREATER than you or me in these situations.

In saying this, I am no way condoning the actions of either party.

Oh🙀she’s a cocky one then what a bitch🙀problem is she could have a knife in her bag.🤔
Or worse, a syringe....
I recall an incident some 20 years ago, when we actually had to hire trained security guards at the shops I was managing, one of our security guys suffered a needle stick injury whilst initiating a bag search. He had to wait for weeks to get the all clear on his AIDS test. The junkie who owned the bag got off with a warning - and yes, her bag had several stolen items in it. Figure that one out 🤨🤨🤨

That’s awful🙀

why would anyone try and exit a shop through a NO EXIT point in the first place, then to ignore a store worker asking to see the contents of her bag.......if not for being highly suspicious of theft from the store.?
Employee did the right thing and she needs to be charged with assault, and banned from ever returning to shop. 😣

He is not a security guard so really doesn't have the right to touch her property. If the store - any store - wants to accuse people of stealing by demanding that staff check their bags, then they need to have certified security staff present, not shop assistants. I'm not say the shopper didn't steal, just that the correct personnel should be present.

The only time I ever went through a no exit gate was when nature called with great urgency. Couldnt wait as i have a cant wait condition. I left the trolley inside and told the staff member of my predicament. It was fine, because, I offered my handbag open for a check.
Mind you, if I was stopped for any period of time, they may have had to do a clean up on gate 1.
In this case, I don't think the staff member could have handled things any differently. The woman was not doing the right thing, and the young man was doing his job.
Looked to me something ingested or injected was at play here.

The IGA worker was in the wrong in my opinion. If he suspected that the customer had stolen something then he should have waited until she left the store. Legally it's not stolen until your outside the premises. I think I would have bopped Him too. How dare he grab a customers bag like that. He needs retraining.
