Caught on tape: Shopper physically assaults IGA employee over bag check

Content warning: This article mentions physical assault which may be disturbing for some readers. Discretion is advised.

Violence rarely solves anything. More often than not, it makes things worse. Choosing to talk and understand each other is always a better way forward.

Unfortunately, a recent altercation at a local IGA shows just how quickly things can escalate when we forget this simple truth.

Recently, a video footage captured a woman in workout attire attacking a supermarket worker as he tried to inspect her bag.

This incident unfolded at the Silver Sands IGA in Mandurah, south of Perth, near 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday.

The woman tried to exit through a restricted door when a male staff member allegedly asked her to show the contents of her bag.

The CCTV video showed the moment when the employee took hold of the woman’s bag as she attempted to exit the store.

In response, the woman can be seen quickly re-entering the store, hitting the man on the back of his head twice, and then perceived to be shouting at the staff.

The altercation over the bag continued until a concerned shopper intervened, trying to calm the situation.

The dispute was resolved when two more store employees assisted their colleague, allowing the woman to collect her bag and exit the store.

The Mandurah Police are now actively investigating the matter.

Anyone with pertinent information, especially about the woman's identity, is encouraged to report it to Crime Stoppers.

Violence against retail workers in Australia

Two of Australia’s leading retail organisations, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA), have raised alarms about the escalating violence towards retail employees.

ARA CEO Paul Zahra commented on the persisting difficulties faced by employees, saying, ‘Customer aggression has been an ongoing challenge for frontline staff.’

Meanwhile, SDA National Secretary Gerard Dwyer highlighted the value of the retail workforce, expressing: ‘These workers should not be abused simply for doing their job and ensuring shoppers get the food they need and the other essentials of life.’

Following over 3,000 reported incidents of threats, violence, and abuse against its staff in the past year, Woolworths is ramping up its security provisions.

The supermarket plans to enhance its CCTV systems, introduce two-way radio headsets, and provide virtual reality-based aggression training.

Through a collaboration with Sonder, they’re launching an app granting staff continuous access to health experts and safety resources.

In addition, Woolworths is working alongside the government to push for legislative reforms that further safeguard retail employees.

Looks like the employee snatched the women’s bag from her. No wonder she was upset.

The way I see it, she was either guilty for failing to scan or deliberately not scanning, or just plain old loopy.
If you're innocent with nothing to hide, what's the issue?
And of course this story has opened up another can of worms, be it positive or negative, for people to have a bitchin session

but she went through a no exit- that would naturally cause the belief she has stolen things. Had she not she should have shown her bag. But she also physically assaulted him several times. To say don't blame her as her bag was taken off her does not excuse her behaviour. She should have been held by security for police for assault. She is 100% at fault.

👍totally agree

another entitled, drug fu@%ed thief. Clearly she is a shoplifter and being caught thought she had the right to attack someone. Other than being told not to challenge shoplifters the police investigating will result in nothing & the revolving door of the justice will just mean she has won. Squeaky wheel comes to mind.

Given it's a story from a tabloid TV network other than the sensationalist vision it is questionable 'news' worthiness. It's selective footage on display, most likely the kid asked her to check her bag (as the store is entitled to do). No evidence that the kid was asked for his reason for challenging this drug affected individual. The most likely result will be facial recognition cameras will no ID her if she enters the story again, then watch the hand holders come out about her privacy rights, but nothing about the retailers rights to stop shoplifting.

Was it all perhaps for television ratings????

Exactly, unfortunately although Mandurah is a lovely beach side suburb they have a large drug problem which in turn relates to shop lifting and other crime as all their money is spent on drugs.
