We've all been there before: You buy or rent a new house, and there's something about the layout or design that just doesn't make sense. Maybe it's an oddly-placed closet, the walls are inexplicably damp, or there’s a door that leads to nowhere. Such is the risk when moving into a new place.
Or in this case, an extra kitchen sink that seems odd and out-of-place.
Recently, an Aussie woman found an extra basin in her friend's kitchen which left her feeling baffled. Unable to find answers herself, she took to the internet to ask for help. The Perth native wrote about the incident in a Facebook group called Cleaning and Organising Inspiration Australia, hoping to find answers.
‘Friends bought a house with this weird basin behind the normal wash basins in the kitchen. What is it used for?’ She wrote in her post and attached a picture. Hundreds of guesses were thrown around in the comment section, with some thinking it could be used as an ice trough, a plant holder, or a food and drinks server.
But as it turns out, many people were just as confused as she was! In her post, she included a photo of the basin in question – which looks suspiciously like an extra sink placed next to the main one (minus any plumbing). Many users were quick to offer their guesses as to the extra sink’s purpose.
Someone commented: ‘No idea, but it could be the perfect spot to put pots of herbs.’ One person agreed by writing, ‘It’s a planter box. You could also use it as an ice bucket. Very common some years ago.’
Another user speculated that the extra basin is where sponges, soaps, and dish liquids could go in. While someone else said that the space could be used to ‘soak dishes in’.
One of the more popular suggestions was that the basin is an ice trough. However, many questioned why it was located so close to the window.
An ice trough is where you can store wine or other cold beverages before serving them to guests during a party. Someone commented: ‘As strange as it seems, it looks like an ice trough/ice well. It’s for keeping drinks.’ This type of design is popular in more luxurious properties, although the same commenter also said that ice troughs aren’t designed to be up against a window.
‘I’d say the originally designed purpose is for an ice well, but considering its location – near a window and not at the end/edge of an island bench – they probably used it for herbs’, someone else said.
While another user supported this statement, saying ‘They’d most likely have a sliding window in front of it, so you'd usually fill it with ice and drinks for parties so people don't need to come inside for drinks.’
