Bread and milk​

Move over, Oreos! In simpler times, Aussies snacked on the humble bread and milk. Some mums would even add a splash of vanilla extract to the warm milk, while others opted for condensed milk for that extra kick of sweetness. Did you use to indulge in this treat? How funny I had added this to the Facebook group Growing up in Australia maybe 15 years ago.

Yes my grandmother would make this at night after dinner or for breakfast. She always used vanilla essence never condensed milk

Yes we would have this for breakfast with a dob of butter and sugar

We even sometimes after soaking bread in milk (sometimes with a bit of herb or beaten egg) would fry it in a dry pan. Yummy - get in my Tummy.

Remember having this at my grandmas….sometimes with homemade condensed milk, and or golden syrup….yummy!!

Italians have a version of this too. My mother would put a dash of espresso coffee for flavour. It was yummy.

My absolute all time favourite breakfast….when I worked at the local takeaway, my boss would make this for us, so we could all have breakfast together before we started work…it was his treat to us every first weekend of the month….yum

Used to have Left over hot cross buns in warm milk as well. My Mum would sprinkle a mix of cinnamon and sugar over the milk and bread mixture.
