Beachside pub's jaw-dropping prices: Over $40 for just three schooners of beer

We're all familiar with those moments when we've earned a well-deserved break and want to unwind with a couple of cold brews in the company of friends.

However, one popular waterfront pub has left its patrons feeling less than relaxed, with outrageously high prices on their frosty beverages.

Hotel Steyne, located in Manly on Sydney's picturesque northern beaches, has recently left a customer dumbfounded by charging $40.90 for just three schooners of beer.

Yes, you read that correctly, folks—as if the already soaring cost of living wasn't enough to contend with these days!

The patron had ordered two schooners of Stone and Wood and one schooner of 4 Pines to enjoy during their night out. Little did they know, their hard-earned money would disappear faster than a cold beer on a hot summer's day, with Stone and Wood setting them back an eye-watering $14.20 per schooner.

Understandably perturbed by the excessive charge, the customer took to the social media platform Reddit to share an image of their receipt, sparking a torrent of outraged comments from fellow baffled beer lovers.

One disgruntled commenter pointed out that: 'France rioted for raising the age of the pension. Surely this is the breaking point for Aussies, right?'

Others confessed that inflated prices have caused them to avoid pubs altogether, with one suggesting they'd decided long ago it was way cheaper to have some mates over and ‘Put on a carton, watch the game.'

However, some social media users were slightly more understanding, noting that the beachfront location and higher living costs in Manly may contribute to the higher-than-average drink prices.

'Manly is one of the most expensive & entitled areas of Australia. Of course, bars charge high prices,' one user commented.

Hotel Steyne has yet to comment on the matter.

It should be noted that Australian beer prices did rise in February after an increase to the tax on beer, set by the ATO to match inflation.

This 3.7 per cent increase, which affects all beer sales (whether by the bottle, carton, or draught), has made Australia the fourth most expensive country in the world for beer tax, lagging only behind Finland, Norway, and Japan.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers' spokesperson explained, 'This is the usual, automatic indexation change that happens twice a year under governments of both persuasions… We listen respectfully to ideas put to us, but these have to be weighed against other priorities and fiscal challenges, with a budget that's heaving with a trillion dollars of debt.'

Key Takeaways

  • A patron at Hotel Steyne in Manly, Sydney, was charged more than $40 for three schooners of beer, sparking outrage.
  • An image of their receipt was posted on Reddit, prompting numerous comments about the high prices.
  • Some social media users argued that the prices were not surprising given the hotel’s beachfront location and Manly’s reputation for being expensive.
  • The price of beer across Australia increased in February due to a tax increase of 3.7% on beer, making Australia's beer tax the fourth highest in the world.

In light of these recent developments, we advise you to keep your eyes peeled and wallets tight when indulging in a cold one. If you find yourself caught between a rock and an expensive bar, always remember the humble joys of inviting friends over for a tipple in the comfort of your home.

We're curious to hear from you—have you visited a pub recently? Have you noticed the rising prices of beer? What are your thoughts on this matter? Please feel free to share your experiences and opinions in the comments below!

You think that's expensive I recently ordered a hamburger from the Alfred hotel in Camperdown $10 ok, got off light, now wait for it I then ordered a Schooner of lemon, lime and Bitters total bill was $25 bucks that's $15 bucks for a soft drink from a mixer tap. Luckily I don't live in Sydney any more.

I own a pub and prices go up twice a year every year. All you hear is complaints about how dear it is etc every time without the consideration of overheads etc. If I charged those kind of prices tho I would have a riot on my hands. Perhaps I should print out this and put it on the wall lol

Well , It has been coming for a long time . Beer was always known as the working man's drink . I actually gave up drinking probably about 5 years ago . Very occassionally , I will buy a sixpack of Great Northern Zero . I find it has the taste of real beer , is refreshing and at 76 , having had many the hangover , I have no regrets next morning . The Government and breweries have finally done it . In their greed , They have stopped me drinking .

The price of everything is getting beyond a joke especially alcohol, who can afford to even go out nowadays. These businesses are just greedy there is no excuse to charge such prices. Inflation hasn't gone up THAT far.

You state that Beer Tax is going up 3.7%....how come non alcoholic beers are very expensive??? Ju
st asking for a friend
I don’t know how true it is but I read that to make non alcoholic beer and wine it costs the same if not more as they make it exactly the same way before they add an extra step to remove the alcohol. Maybe all gets taxed before the alcohol is removed? I could be totally wrong.

As a saying goes “Liquid Gold”!!!

Wicked, thank goodness I don’t drink beer, and don’t drink very much of anything at the best of times.

MAY BE TIME TO GIVE UP THE GROG, PEOPLE!

Well for a start they were in Manly - more money than sense.
Then they ordered two different microbrewery beers, one from Byron Bay (Stone & Wood) and the other from Manly (4 Pines). Both of these are in limited supply so come at a premium price. I suspect there were other cheaper brands on sale but if not they got what they paid for.

The crap about Manly being the most expensive region in Australia would strongly suggest that the writer has never travelled outside his own suburb.
Manly, and the majority of the Northern Beaches region is a significantly cheaper region to live then a lot of more salubrious regions of Sydney and we would have a lower income population then many other Sydney suburbs.
For example, just check the price of petrol and you just might find that our prices are significantly cheaper then many other regions.

Actually, I would have to disagree with you there, living as I do in a suburb on the Northern Beaches. Manly may not be the most expensive region in Australia, but Manly and Palm Beach would of course be near the top of the food chain but the other NB suburbs are now not far behind. Compare for example the median weekly income of Mosman at $2892 and NB $2592 and the average mortgage in Mosman $3870 and NB $3124. All figures from ABS! It is expensive to live on the Northern Beaches.

Drinkers complaint?
Poor smokers have been hit to leg with the extortionate pricing of a miserable smoke. Labor party uses them as cash cows and no wonder the cigarettes are fair game for crooks. And forcing youth to go on and get drugs cheaper than the smokes.

  • Some social media users argued that the prices were not surprising given the hotel’s beachfront location and Manly’s reputation for being expensive.

a bit hard to swallow.

Drinkers complaint?
Poor smokers have been hit to leg with the extortionate pricing of a miserable smoke. Labor party uses them as cash cows and no wonder the cigarettes are fair game for crooks. And forcing youth to go on and get drugs cheaper than the smokes.
a miserable smoke can lead to more complications. I know by my having been a smoker. rethink.
