‘Not in the spirit of sport’: Peter Dutton backs bold new stance in explosive interview

Policies that spark fierce debate often reveal deeper tensions within society, especially when they challenge long-held beliefs about fairness and competition.

A recent high-profile interview has reignited one of the most contentious discussions in modern politics, with a key figure hinting at a bold new direction.

What followed was a series of statements that could signal a major shift in policy, leaving many questioning what comes next.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton indicated his support for banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, aligning with a recent move by US President Donald Trump.

During an interview with Peta Credlin on 1 February, Mr Dutton stated that allowing trans athletes to compete against biological women was ‘not in the spirit of sport.’

He argued that the issue required honesty, asserting: ‘It’s not about discriminating against anyone, including young girls.’

He added: ‘I just don’t believe in discriminating against anyone, not on the basis of anything, and for young girls not to be able to achieve their Olympic dream, their pathway to a World Cup, or to be displaced from a team, because, you know, somebody has a physiological advantage over them. I just don’t think that that’s in the spirit of sport.’

Mr Dutton’s remarks came after President Trump signed an executive order on 31 January 2025, prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in school sports.

The directive, based on his interpretation of Title IX, was set to be enforced by the US Department of Justice, though experts suggested its impact on sports would be minimal.

According to reports, only 10 transgender athletes had been recorded among the 520,000 students competing in 1,100 member schools.

Credlin asked Mr Dutton whether the issue was personal to him, given his daughter’s background as a competitive swimmer.

Mr Dutton responded: ‘We know that there are two sexes, and we know that, you know, for many families, for different reasons, this is a very confronting debate.’

He continued: ‘I mean, I respect somebody’s privacy, their privacy, of their sexuality, of their situation, and that’s paramount to me, but again, we have to have a society which respects parental rights and the rights of children to be innocent.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Mr Dutton criticised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s response to rising anti-Semitism in Australia, calling it ‘one of the most shameful periods of leadership or lack thereof, that I’ve seen in my lifetime.’

He warned of a potential terrorist attack if the issue was not treated as a national security crisis, saying: ‘You know that that’s not about politics. It’s because there is a serious problem here, and somebody will lose their life.’

He also reaffirmed his commitment to keeping 26 January as Australia Day and insisted that only the Australian flag should be displayed at press conferences if he became Prime Minister.

He pointed out that Mr Albanese currently displayed both the Australian and Aboriginal flags during media briefings.

He stated: ‘And I just think there is a collective sigh of relief, and a number of people have come up to me to say, "thanks for what you said in relation to the flag". You know, we have a lot of respect for the indigenous flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag, but it is not our national flag.’

He questioned why the national flag should not be fully embraced, saying, ‘And I think, "well, why? Why would we be ashamed of that. Why wouldn’t we embrace it?"’

Mr Dutton also urged businesses to continue selling Australia Day merchandise despite recent boycotts.

He refused to back down on his stance, stating: ‘You know, because the haters will hate, and there’s always that element.’

He specifically called out Woolworths for its previous decision to stop selling Australia Day items but commended the supermarket for reversing its stance this year.

He concluded with a sharp critique of Mr Albanese, saying: ‘I think he’s completely and utterly disconnected with people in the suburbs and that’s why I say I think the modern Labor Party is not the party of the worker.’

He added: ‘The modern Labor Party is the party of the inner city trendy, and that has created all sorts of problems there.’

It really disappoints me that our pollies dont get on with the business of what we pay them tooo much to do, i am disappointed that opposition leader takes on many tasks that alienate the community from him, these people go thru huge hassles to feel right and then to be slammed down it is very sad ,all pollies get on with the jobs you r paid to do

Ok, everyone talking about fairness.
If it's to be really fair is more lots more transparent drug testing. Strange that has not talked about when the diversion is Genders. How come no one has talked about the Chinese Woman's Olympic swimming team. They would put a lot of males to shame and that is OK as it's only every 4 years and if questioned the racist card would be shown.

Well done. It certainly captures what everyone has forgotteñ whats been happening from years gone by to whats going to happen in years to come.

Has anybody heard about all the oil and gas that is in the Ģaza Strip. I wonder why it hasn't been mentioned in Rupert Murdochs paper, cause its hush hush information
There is so many things wrong with Trump and his obsession with money.

Trump is one of the most corrupt people on the planet, all he wants is to create chaos and more money for himself. He wants to be the American Putin, the people need to stop him before it goes any further. Trump used is position last time as president to make himself richer, and he and his wife are doing it again.

People have to stop watching Murdoch media, it's far right and has no interest in the truth.
Oh dear, where do I start?! Back in 2016, the mere thought of Donald Trump as president of the US was horrifying. And then I started thinking. If all the mainstream media outlets are singing from the same hymn sheet, for the first time ever, and they're all turning themselves inside out to blacken his name, they're scared. What are they scared of?

I began reading up on American politics, which I'd studied at school, and realised that Obama and his cronies were corrupt to a ridiculous degree. The Clintons wrote the book on dodgy dealing. There's proof that Bill attended Jeffrey Epstein's Island on 26 occasions after dismissing his security detail. Those who tried to link Trump with Epstein all finally admitted they'd been lying. Some admitted they were paid to lie.

You desperately need to educate yourself. Start by googling the USAID scandal. The fund put aside to help overseas countries in times of desperate need. FBI and CIA operatives have been having a wonderful time spending the money. Almost unbelievably, they've been sending money from this fund to George Soros, one of the world's richest men. Look up evil and corruption in the dictionary, and you'll see a picture of this creature. His mates are people like Bill Gates and Klaus Schwab.

FYI, Trump accepted no salary during his term as president. If you're so sure that he and Melania are stealing money or involving themselves in corrupt activities, supply the sources of this information.

As to telling people to stop watching Murdoch media, what gives you the right to tell people what to watch? I don't watch or read Murdoch media. There are many more sources of information to be had that aren't controlled by the crooks on the ABC, SBS and the three commercial channels.

Transgender athletes competing in women's sports is nothing more than cheating. If a person wishes to compete in a sport, then compete against people of your own age and gender. The absurdity of allowing a biological male to compete fairly against female athletes is ridiculous. We segregate male and female sports for the same reason we segregate ages in sports. You would not allow an 18-year-old teenager to compete against kindergarten or primary school students. I do not believe that 95% of those claiming to be transgender are true transgender individuals. I do believe that these most of these people need psychological help and assessments. The rest of these so-called transgender individuals are nothing more than attention seeking narcissist, perverts and or pedophiles. True transgender individuals do not parade around cross dressing, pushing their self-proclaimed delusional ideology onto everyone else. I fully support the banning of all transgender athletes competing in sports against the opposite gender.

Anyone for Al Jazeera news? How about CNN, CBS, NBC.... Shall we give the Xinhua News Agency and KCNA a go?

Does anybody know the frequency for Radio Baghdad?

You will find that ALL news outlets have covert or overt political leanings to varying degrees.

To you and the rest taking this bait I say piffle to you all. As if Transgenders are overflowing like a flood into woman's sport. Drug cheating in both Male and Female sports is more, lots more prevailing.
Why is that not talked about? It's because you and the rest are biting a diversion and being sucked in.

I fully agree with all of Dutton’s stances. It is time for sanity to prevail, and Trump is the leader of common sense and sanity! Dutton would do well to follow more of Trump’s policies and actions - like withdrawing from WHO and the Paris Agreement.

WHAT???!!!! I don’t believe this man in the USA is sane; second go, and again he’s attempting to try and rule the world by wanting to take over Greenland, Canada, the Gulf of Mexico, The Panama Canal etc. You have got to be joking!

A mental examination by an unbiased, unafraid doctor will reveal the truth. Problem is, they all seem to be afraid of speaking up lest they either lose their jobs and income or are deported because their parents or they migrated to the USA many years ago and worked hard to get to where they are now.

Look at the way he treated Dr Fauci, what he saying about the WHO and other global organisations, etc.

Wake up - that country will soon go to the dogs, then later on they will once more need all the people (migrants) who worked hard to build it and were banished. And the person now in charge will be ‘6 feet under’ having made his money on his own citizens and won’t have to worry about the mess he left behind.

Well of course he’s following Trumps policies - he has none of his own
Mr Dutton`s determination to follow Trump like policies is starting to become embarrassing, surely he could come up with something more original. But I don`t think he has an original bone in his body. As far as the trangender issue "10 transgender athletes had been recorded among the 520,000 students competing in 1,100 member schools." that a quote!! These athletes are closley veted and it does not mean a thing as they don`t have an advantage because their hormone levels change once they undergo a change in their sex. Also have you seen the size and development of athletes who are not transgender, go figure!!

I agree trans women should not compete against women because of unfair advantage, but banning them from competing at all is also unfair. They need to either compete with their original sex if they wish, or will need their own category.
That appears to one of the problems as it seems that ones being spoken about were seemingly only mediocre in their chosen sport but once they "changed sex!!!" excelled to such an extent that they were running rings around the top female athletes?

Wow!
What a diverse group we are.
I am for banning Trans athletes, ( who couldn't make it in male sports, so they changed), from female sports.
Also DEI is a total nonsense. Equality of OPPORTUNITY!
Credlin and Bolt are extremely biased............ towards the truth, so if you don't like the truth... don't watch them.
Watch "our " ABC instead.
And hasn't it been caught out a lot .
" You want the truth.... You can't handle the truth"
But then, I guess I am biased.
Aren't we all? Also what your definition of "truth"? I suspect it varies from mine.

I totally agree…. I have no thoughts about the transgender population….Any person is first of all a human being with their own characteristics, morals etc and that’s how I look at it, I am very happy that I look at people for who they are instead of what they are…. Anyway like I said, transgender women do not belong in any female sports, I think males always have an advantage over females in the sporting arena. Would it be so wrong though to add Transgender as a sporting category, where like is competing like, just as males compete against males and females against females. I do think transgender people should be able to compete in sporting events, but with each other….That would be fair….
