‘Not in the spirit of sport’: Peter Dutton backs bold new stance in explosive interview

Policies that spark fierce debate often reveal deeper tensions within society, especially when they challenge long-held beliefs about fairness and competition.

A recent high-profile interview has reignited one of the most contentious discussions in modern politics, with a key figure hinting at a bold new direction.

What followed was a series of statements that could signal a major shift in policy, leaving many questioning what comes next.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton indicated his support for banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, aligning with a recent move by US President Donald Trump.

During an interview with Peta Credlin on 1 February, Mr Dutton stated that allowing trans athletes to compete against biological women was ‘not in the spirit of sport.’

He argued that the issue required honesty, asserting: ‘It’s not about discriminating against anyone, including young girls.’

He added: ‘I just don’t believe in discriminating against anyone, not on the basis of anything, and for young girls not to be able to achieve their Olympic dream, their pathway to a World Cup, or to be displaced from a team, because, you know, somebody has a physiological advantage over them. I just don’t think that that’s in the spirit of sport.’

Mr Dutton’s remarks came after President Trump signed an executive order on 31 January 2025, prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in school sports.

The directive, based on his interpretation of Title IX, was set to be enforced by the US Department of Justice, though experts suggested its impact on sports would be minimal.

According to reports, only 10 transgender athletes had been recorded among the 520,000 students competing in 1,100 member schools.

Credlin asked Mr Dutton whether the issue was personal to him, given his daughter’s background as a competitive swimmer.

Mr Dutton responded: ‘We know that there are two sexes, and we know that, you know, for many families, for different reasons, this is a very confronting debate.’

He continued: ‘I mean, I respect somebody’s privacy, their privacy, of their sexuality, of their situation, and that’s paramount to me, but again, we have to have a society which respects parental rights and the rights of children to be innocent.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Mr Dutton criticised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s response to rising anti-Semitism in Australia, calling it ‘one of the most shameful periods of leadership or lack thereof, that I’ve seen in my lifetime.’

He warned of a potential terrorist attack if the issue was not treated as a national security crisis, saying: ‘You know that that’s not about politics. It’s because there is a serious problem here, and somebody will lose their life.’

He also reaffirmed his commitment to keeping 26 January as Australia Day and insisted that only the Australian flag should be displayed at press conferences if he became Prime Minister.

He pointed out that Mr Albanese currently displayed both the Australian and Aboriginal flags during media briefings.

He stated: ‘And I just think there is a collective sigh of relief, and a number of people have come up to me to say, "thanks for what you said in relation to the flag". You know, we have a lot of respect for the indigenous flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag, but it is not our national flag.’

He questioned why the national flag should not be fully embraced, saying, ‘And I think, "well, why? Why would we be ashamed of that. Why wouldn’t we embrace it?"’

Mr Dutton also urged businesses to continue selling Australia Day merchandise despite recent boycotts.

He refused to back down on his stance, stating: ‘You know, because the haters will hate, and there’s always that element.’

He specifically called out Woolworths for its previous decision to stop selling Australia Day items but commended the supermarket for reversing its stance this year.

He concluded with a sharp critique of Mr Albanese, saying: ‘I think he’s completely and utterly disconnected with people in the suburbs and that’s why I say I think the modern Labor Party is not the party of the worker.’

He added: ‘The modern Labor Party is the party of the inner city trendy, and that has created all sorts of problems there.’

I must admit that while I disagree with most of Peter Duttons opinions, this subject needs to be addressed. I am sympathetic to the Indigenous course and would 100% back them on their rights. When I watch a sport, any sport, and our Anthem is sang, I am annoyed when indigenous people refuse to sing.

Dutton should realise we’re not as dumb as Americans and his Trump like approach to politics in this country won’t wash.As for being interviewed by Credlin need I say more? With the possible exception of Bolt she would have to the most bias “ journalist “ in Australia and that’s saying something
So what has this got to do with banning trans genders from competing in particularly female sports. Nothing. We need to look at the policies not the people promoting them. Other wise we will go to hell in a basket

I am in agreement there needs a different catergory in sport with transgenders.
I think a lot of people in Australia has forgotten this has been spoken about for quite a few years. It has been a subject for starting a conversation surrounding sport in Australia
So why does Peter Dutton praises about how only Trump thought of it first. Huh
I for one do not want Trumps views here iñ Australia.
We have enough problems with Pro right as it is. Little by little things are sĺowly coming to light which pollies are trying so hard to hìde about themselves. Because there is a ĺot more people out there who is not Pro right.

So whò is going to start the conversation in for a catergory for the transgenders in sport. I am sure there is a ĺot out there who is for it.

I agree with a lot of Trumps ideas and hope they are used globally to clean up the corrupt, money laundering and all the money being made by trafficking ( globally). They need to stop the more than one gender mentality as well. It’s quite exciting seeing Trump going in like a steam train to implement things and the ones who are on the gravy train using our tax money! I’m with Dutton on the no male born athletes to compete in female sports.
I would sincerely suggest that before you open your trap with such rubbish you read the 2 books written by his niece and nephew,, Ted and Mary. Donald Trump is the return of HITLER BUT WORSE. I was horrified after reading Ted's book and am halfway through Mary's and it's even worse.

Dutton grasps onto anything that Trump says that will give him something to make an issue that will put him in the spotlight. And like his supporters they follow him like sheep. 🐑 I agree that transgender men should not compete in women’s sport but to make a big political issue of it, well definitely not.

For all those who think Dutton would be a great leader, I am wondering what you are smoking. Seriously he is worse the Scomo and that is saying something and as for those who believe that what Trump is promoting and saying he will do for his country and the world please let's send him to his own planet so he can screw that up. For someone who has had multiple businesses and all have gone into bankruptcy. He honestly believes he is a good businessman and can solve all the problems of America and the world. What a very sad world this is becoming with men like him in a leadership position.

Trump is one of the most corrupt people on the planet, all he wants is to create chaos and more money for himself. He wants to be the American Putin, the people need to stop him before it goes any further. Trump used is position last time as president to make himself richer, and he and his wife are doing it again.

People have to stop watching Murdoch media, it's far right and has no interest in the truth.
You are clearly outnumbered here...

I fully agree with all of Dutton’s stances. It is time for sanity to prevail, and Trump is the leader of common sense and sanity! Dutton would do well to follow more of Trump’s policies and actions - like withdrawing from WHO and the Paris Agreement.
First time I’ve seen Trump and sanity used in the same sentence…….

I REALLY hate to agree with Trump and Dutton. Dutton with what he says makes sense to me. I wonder if maybe there should be a separate group who comete against eachother, not against those of Female or Male genders? I would support that idea. For me to please all, we could go with that. Just an suggestion.

Without knowledge of the process of becoming transgender, if that person's hormone level is brought into line with other female athletes and they are on a par with them, then presumably they would all be competing on a level playing field.
As for Peter Dutton accusing the Prime Minister of gross mismanagement of antisemitism in Australia, both parties should be asking the question - Why is there a dramatic rise in antisemitism, Worldwide, not just here, and what is the cause of the widening rifts in communities, where usually peaceful neighbourhoods are turning against each other? If Israel wasn't continuing with its war of supreme revenge, would Australian authorities be needing to rise to these new highs of security?
With the Trumpelon duo now on the World stage with its quickfire, out-of-the-box solutions, not only to all the problems in the Universe, but to getting richer in the process, each political party should make public full details of how they propose to manage Australia's relationships with the US. Also, in the case of the Liberal party, Peter Dutton has said that one of his first actions as Prime Minister will be to call Netanyahu to apologise for Australia's apparent disrespect of his government and to pledge our country's support for his cause. Shouldn't voters and taxpayers be entitled to know, before the election, the exact terms of that support, whether it be financial, provision of equipment and manpower, or just a pat on the back to say what a good job he's doing.

That is the least of the problems in Australia.... drain the swamp comes first and foremost ... get rid of all the rorting and back-scratching that occurs in politics, and make sure that the politicians are measured..... what they promise is what they deliver and are remunerated accordingly.
