‘Not in the spirit of sport’: Peter Dutton backs bold new stance in explosive interview

Policies that spark fierce debate often reveal deeper tensions within society, especially when they challenge long-held beliefs about fairness and competition.

A recent high-profile interview has reignited one of the most contentious discussions in modern politics, with a key figure hinting at a bold new direction.

What followed was a series of statements that could signal a major shift in policy, leaving many questioning what comes next.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton indicated his support for banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, aligning with a recent move by US President Donald Trump.

During an interview with Peta Credlin on 1 February, Mr Dutton stated that allowing trans athletes to compete against biological women was ‘not in the spirit of sport.’

He argued that the issue required honesty, asserting: ‘It’s not about discriminating against anyone, including young girls.’

He added: ‘I just don’t believe in discriminating against anyone, not on the basis of anything, and for young girls not to be able to achieve their Olympic dream, their pathway to a World Cup, or to be displaced from a team, because, you know, somebody has a physiological advantage over them. I just don’t think that that’s in the spirit of sport.’

Mr Dutton’s remarks came after President Trump signed an executive order on 31 January 2025, prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in school sports.

The directive, based on his interpretation of Title IX, was set to be enforced by the US Department of Justice, though experts suggested its impact on sports would be minimal.

According to reports, only 10 transgender athletes had been recorded among the 520,000 students competing in 1,100 member schools.

Credlin asked Mr Dutton whether the issue was personal to him, given his daughter’s background as a competitive swimmer.

Mr Dutton responded: ‘We know that there are two sexes, and we know that, you know, for many families, for different reasons, this is a very confronting debate.’

He continued: ‘I mean, I respect somebody’s privacy, their privacy, of their sexuality, of their situation, and that’s paramount to me, but again, we have to have a society which respects parental rights and the rights of children to be innocent.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Mr Dutton criticised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s response to rising anti-Semitism in Australia, calling it ‘one of the most shameful periods of leadership or lack thereof, that I’ve seen in my lifetime.’

He warned of a potential terrorist attack if the issue was not treated as a national security crisis, saying: ‘You know that that’s not about politics. It’s because there is a serious problem here, and somebody will lose their life.’

He also reaffirmed his commitment to keeping 26 January as Australia Day and insisted that only the Australian flag should be displayed at press conferences if he became Prime Minister.

He pointed out that Mr Albanese currently displayed both the Australian and Aboriginal flags during media briefings.

He stated: ‘And I just think there is a collective sigh of relief, and a number of people have come up to me to say, "thanks for what you said in relation to the flag". You know, we have a lot of respect for the indigenous flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag, but it is not our national flag.’

He questioned why the national flag should not be fully embraced, saying, ‘And I think, "well, why? Why would we be ashamed of that. Why wouldn’t we embrace it?"’

Mr Dutton also urged businesses to continue selling Australia Day merchandise despite recent boycotts.

He refused to back down on his stance, stating: ‘You know, because the haters will hate, and there’s always that element.’

He specifically called out Woolworths for its previous decision to stop selling Australia Day items but commended the supermarket for reversing its stance this year.

He concluded with a sharp critique of Mr Albanese, saying: ‘I think he’s completely and utterly disconnected with people in the suburbs and that’s why I say I think the modern Labor Party is not the party of the worker.’

He added: ‘The modern Labor Party is the party of the inner city trendy, and that has created all sorts of problems there.’

I also agree that there are only two genders what some of these young mothers/ fathers are putting their children through is criminal. And as for a make that changes to a female then insists on playing in a female team???? That just isn’t on!!!!!

Ummm just saying I have a dog that identifies as a human hahahaha. Sorry I couldn’t resist

Wow!
What a diverse group we are.
I am for banning Trans athletes, ( who couldn't make it in male sports, so they changed), from female sports.
Also DEI is a total nonsense. Equality of OPPORTUNITY!
Credlin and Bolt are extremely biased............ towards the truth, so if you don't like the truth... don't watch them.
Watch "our " ABC instead.
And hasn't it been caught out a lot .
" You want the truth.... You can't handle the truth"
But then, I guess I am biased.
Credlin & Bolt - far right
ABC - far left
SBS - anything goes
Greens - even they don't know
Teals - no views - no clue - no spine - totally ineffective
Males are males and females are females 🎤

You can say what you like about Trump but he is assertive and hasn't sat on his thumbs since being in power and that is what we need in Australia.
Dutton was right regarding transgender females not completing in womens sports.
The Australian flag should be the only flag displayed on Australia Day after all the Aboriginals are Aussies too so why should they want their own flag anyway?
Since they were apologised to they just keep demanding all the time.

I must admit that while I disagree with most of Peter Duttons opinions, this subject needs to be addressed. I am sympathetic to the Indigenous course and would 100% back them on their rights. When I watch a sport, any sport, and our Anthem is sang, I am annoyed when indigenous people refuse to sing.
Simple solution - follow the stupid is as stupid does rules - If indigenous refuse to sing National anthem, white population should turn their backs during "welcome" and "smoking" ceremonies then watch the hue and cry about disrespect and discrimination!

Most of these comments leave me gasping. We are not electing a president. We have a Prime Minister who fronts a political party. When we vote we do not vote for the PM but our own representative in a party or independent. All this posturing about Dutton vs Albanese is of no consequence. No wonder the under 30's think that the upcoming election is a popularity contest between these two loonies. They have no idea what our parliamentary system is about.
As spokespersons for each party - both have a responsibility to clearly state their party's objectives in the next election and should be held to account for any failure in carrying out their "promises".

Trump would have to be the biggest moron in history. No only does he NOT have any common sense whatsoever, he also has severe dementia, and totally incoherent, not to mention he is a convicted felon who thinks he has the right to do what he wants, when he wants and doesn't have to answer to anyone including the law. And let's not forget the fact he is an insurrectionist against his own country and he wants to be a nazi dictator. He is a grandiose narcissist, orange facist turd who no respect for anyone but himself. He also has the worst case of verbal diarrhoea in history. In the few weeks he has been a dictator he has broken the law several times and will continue to do so until some stupid judge has the balls to lock up this evil piece of shit in either a mental institution or better still, a jail cell with the door welded shut so he never sees the light of day again. Anyone in Australia who thinks this man is some kind of God should get the hell out of our country and go to the United States Of Gunland and join those evil demented mother f*****s known as MAGA morons and never return to our country again because you are as mentally unstable as President Felon himself. Albosleazy, Dutton are not much different. We need someone who cares about Australia and Australians instead of lining their own pockets from our taxes, fines and pay-offs. It's time for change.

Was he waiting for the Trumpster to make the first move???? He is a follower, not a leader.....

I agree with a lot of Trumps ideas and hope they are used globally to clean up the corrupt, money laundering and all the money being made by trafficking ( globally). They need to stop the more than one gender mentality as well. It’s quite exciting seeing Trump going in like a steam train to implement things and the ones who are on the gravy train using our tax money! I’m with Dutton on the no male born athletes to compete in female sports.
Trump is the most evil corrupt pathetic excuse for a human being in history. Trump is looking after himself and his billionaire fake friends. He does not give a shit about anyone. If you think this evil SOB is so great go join his MAGA morons in America and learn the hard way just like the idiots who voted for him.

Without knowledge of the process of becoming transgender, if that person's hormone level is brought into line with other female athletes and they are on a par with them, then presumably they would all be competing on a level playing field.
As for Peter Dutton accusing the Prime Minister of gross mismanagement of antisemitism in Australia, both parties should be asking the question - Why is there a dramatic rise in antisemitism, Worldwide, not just here, and what is the cause of the widening rifts in communities, where usually peaceful neighbourhoods are turning against each other? If Israel wasn't continuing with its war of supreme revenge, would Australian authorities be needing to rise to these new highs of security?
With the Trumpelon duo now on the World stage with its quickfire, out-of-the-box solutions, not only to all the problems in the Universe, but to getting richer in the process, each political party should make public full details of how they propose to manage Australia's relationships with the US. Also, in the case of the Liberal party, Peter Dutton has said that one of his first actions as Prime Minister will be to call Netanyahu to apologise for Australia's apparent disrespect of his government and to pledge our country's support for his cause. Shouldn't voters and taxpayers be entitled to know, before the election, the exact terms of that support, whether it be financial, provision of equipment and manpower, or just a pat on the back to say what a good job he's doing.
What a load of S#!T..."Israel is continuing the war!!!" Who started it and EVERY other war with Israel? Who's been terrorising and murdering civilians in Israel EVERY day for 70 years? Who's holding civilian women, babies and the elderly - raping, beating and starving them?
Don't let your ass get jealous of all the S#!T that comes out of your mouth! Get your facts right!1738978467645.png

Dutton should realise we’re not as dumb as Americans and his Trump like approach to politics in this country won’t wash.As for being interviewed by Credlin need I say more? With the possible exception of Bolt she would have to the most bias “ journalist “ in Australia and that’s saying something
Trump is simply the voice of common sense - something we need more of here.

No I agree with him - totally dislike Trump and his ilk and what they stand for. Has nothing to do with labor (Australian only) left wing policies. I am not a right winger nor left but I do know fairness and genuine concern for Australia's future - and Trump is not it - nor is Albanese and his current labor cohorts. They spell disaster for us.
Dutton himself does nothing for me as he speaks only of his personal preferences. I do believe there are better spokespeople in the liberals who would serve Australia better.
