Your vote matters: Here are several reminders for the upcoming May polls

As the buzz of the upcoming federal election on 3 May 2025 continues to build, Australians are being reminded of their civic duties.

Along with their duties, they are also reminded of their responsibilities and the consequences of not adhering to the democratic process.

While most citizens are aware of the fine for not voting, there's a lesser-known yet far more severe penalty that awaits anyone caught voting more than once.

This act has always been frowned upon.

It is a criminal offence under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 and the Referendum (Machinery Provisions) Act 1984.

How will authorities know that voters cast their vote more than once?

After the polls close on election day, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) meticulously processes voter lists from polling places nationwide.

These scans identify any instances where a voter's name has been marked off more than once.

The AEC would then contact voters who potentially voted multiple times for an explanation.

If there's evidence of deliberate double-voting, the matter could be escalated to the Australian Federal Police and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions for further action.

Caught offenders could face fines of up to 60 penalty units—translating to a hefty sum of up to $19,800.

They may also face 12 months of imprisonment.

In Australia, voting is more than a right; it's a legal obligation for every citizen over the age of 18.

While many worry that they could get in jail for not voting, failing to vote should not result in jail time.

However, failing to vote could result in a $20 penalty.

After receiving a notice from the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) for not voting, voters may also receive instructions on how to settle the fine.

The voter enrolment ended last Friday, 4 April.

Voters with a 'valid and sufficient reason' for their absence at the polls can inform the AEC.

The Divisional Returning Officer (DRO) for your electorate will review your case and decide if your reason exempts you from the fine.

While it's compulsory for all eligible Australian citizens to vote, there are provisions for those who cannot make it to the polling stations on election day.

Early voting starts two weeks prior to the election and should begin on Saturday, 19 April 2025.

Postal votes are also an option for those unable to vote in person.

As Aussies follow the election campaign trail and watch politicians make their pitches, remember the importance of every vote.

Let everyone do their part to ensure a fair and just election this 3 May.

The victim of crime levy helps those who are victims of crime like myself when I was attacked when I was driving a cab in Brisbane I was attacked by a young man who got in the back seat and then proceeded to put a meat cleaver to my throat and demanded money He drew blood on the side of my neck but if I hate anything it’s someone trying to force me to do something I don’t want to do He came off the worst for his actions I also ended up with a cut hand from taking the meat cleaver from him

Once again most likely harsher penalties for these type of things than scumbags get for aggravated burglaries, home invasions, assaults, car jackings, etc?
The right to vote is our most precious right. People may be flippant & make jokes about voting but what a privilege we have in this country. Think carefully & to the polls, caste your vote with pride. People on some countries are dying for this right.

I can't understand why we still have to get our names marked off on the role. Surely these days the system could be computerized, thus preventing those who wish to vote multiple times from doing so.
My answer is a huge NO.
Why, well Medibank had 1000s of accounts hacked as many others to long to list in my short life I have left. I don't trust it. Paper is harder to hack.

I think being forced to vote is totally wrong. I also think the preference system when counting votes is totally wrong.
Voting is a personal thing and if you choose not to vote then you deserve to end up with a person you dislike. But it should be the individual who decides whether or not to vote.
With the preference system as it stands it is completely flawed. It should be whoever gets the most votes is the person elected, another reason why everyone should vote but not be forced to vote. There should not be a prefrence system at all because everyone is always disappointed with the results when preferences are included.

Just a shame only 2 choices even tho we supposedly have more, preferences are a con

The vote for women was hard fought for, and you are so right, some people in other countries do not even get the opportunity.

Voting in America is not compulsary and with the lack of interest in voting, shown by Americans, you get people like Mr Trump a the helm, good luck.

Not many people understand the preferential voting system. You get a blank form and mark your own preferences. Do not copy a political parties preferences. Power to the people.

I'm think I previously did a postal vote but I'm not 100% sure. How do I find out whether or not I did??.
You're only allowed to apply once. Does one application apply to both Commonwealth and State Elections??

After the last debacle where the election polling places didn't have enough forms to vote (I have heard nothing in relation to this inquiry) I would think that it’s not a good idea to highlight voter’s responsibilities

Yebbut, why should you have to? It's not like you're betting on 1, 2 or 3 in a race. You're choosing only one to win. If he/she/it gets up, then that one is the fair, ultimate winner of the voting process and the others can "suck it up, princess".
The preference system was not chosen to elect a winner, it was organised by political parties and their cronies to ensure that THEIR candidates have a better chance of filling the seat.
