It was a morning of surprises on Sunrise this week when one of its beloved TV journalists returned to the show just two months after quitting the role of host after an incredible 21 years.
David 'Kochie' Koch has returned for a short segment in this week’s episode of Sunrise. As some of you might remember, we wrote about his departure in May to spend more time with family and pursue other endeavours.
'I have decided to hang up the boots as co-host of Sunrise. After nearly 21 years and over 5300 shows…' he said on air while getting emotional.
'16,000 hours of TV, it is now time to work business hours and have some flexibility to focus more on our big family and the family business. And frankly, my football club as well.'
Koch is also the chairman of the Port Adelaide Football Club.
But Kochie hasn’t been able to stay away from the show entirely, as he was invited back this week to weigh in on the cost-of-living pressures.
'Let’s bring in someone who knows a little something about personal finance,' said Natalie Barr–Kochie’s previous co-host–as she introduced him on the show. 'Good morning to you, David Koch.'
The 67-year-old admitted he was 'enjoying the sleep-ins' at home before revealing his new role–economic director at online comparison website Compare the Market.
'They approached me and said, “Hey, can you come and help our Compare the Market clients and give them a bit of advice?”' he shared.
'As you know, that’s my sweet spot being a finance nerd all these years, so it’s really good to be able to join the team and really help the Compare the Market clients.'
Known for his warm charisma and unrivalled knowledge of finance, David Koch has stepped into a new role that fits his expertise.
The newly minted economic director of Compare the Market focuses on helping customers choose insurance, energy plans, and many other financial matters.
The website is a platform that compares various market products, and who better to navigate this than Kochie, a seasoned finance journalist and presenter with decades of experience under his belt.
Kochie's wife Libby, a stalwart supporter of Compare the Market, has inspired many with her tales of wise market comparisons that have saved their family some precious dollars.
This new role mirrors Kochie's ongoing advocacy for financial savviness, a vision he now shares with a company that has a similar advocacy.
In essence, the switch to Compare the Market is a career move for David Koch that’s right up his alley.
‘I am so glad to have you on the screen with some good advise, Kochie!’ one user said.
While another user wished Kochie well saying: ‘Enjoy what you are doing with family!’
Some users also expressed disappointment in his return. ‘Please Kochie…leave things the way they are now,’ one user said.
While another user said: ‘Thank heavens he’s only on for a short time…’
