You won't believe the gross stuff hiding in your carpet!

We don't mean to alarm you folks, but there's a good chance your carpet is harbouring some pretty gross stuff. And by 'pretty gross', we mean things that you definitely don't want to be sharing your home with.

Now, we're not trying to gross you out or make you paranoid – we just want to make sure that our members are as informed as possible about what might be lurking in their homes, and how best to get rid of it.

When it comes to carpets and rugs, how often should they be vacuumed? Credit: Pexels/Liliana Drew.

You see, according to research carried out by a household electronics company, the vast majority of us should be vacuuming our floors once or twice a week and giving high-traffic areas a third go weekly too.

But the study found that 44 per cent of us only clean when there was visible dust and dirt on the floor.

This means that many of us are walking around on floors covered in microscopic dust particles, bacteria, viruses, pollen, allergens... and (prepare to be truly horrified) dust mite faeces.

Yes – those tiny creatures that live off our dead skin cells actually poop all over our floors! And we track it everywhere we go. Ew!

Carpets can hide all sorts of nasties between their fibres, so it's important to vacuum regularly, especially in high-traffic areas. Thicker carpets require more frequent vacuuming, says Dennis Mathews, a Senior Research Scientist at Dyson. This applies to other textiles like sofas and mattresses too.

'It's good practice to vacuum areas in the house that receive more footfall to avoid dirt and dust from building up and grinding into the ground,' says Dennis.

'Frequency of vacuuming should also depend on how many people live in your home, if you have pets or number of pets and various other factors.'

Key Takeaways

  • Many of us are not aware of how often we need to vacuum our carpet to ensure it's as clean as possible.
  • Carpets can hide dust and dirt between their fibres, as well as harbour microscopic life such as dust mites, bacteria moulds and allergens.
  • A Senior Research Scientist advises that the vast majority of us should vacuum our floors once or twice a week.
So there you have it, members – now you know what might be hiding in your carpet! Just remember to vacuum regularly (especially if you have pets).

We found the simplest solution and it was very easy indeed.... We removed all the stinking carpets from the home, dont like them and dont want them nothing but dust and germ collectors and are unhealthy.... A mat or a small rug can at least be taken out side to be cleaned an the dust underneath them cleaned up.... Vinyl much easier to clean
