Sydney is set to deliver its biggest and brightest New Year’s Eve celebration yet, with thousands of locals and tourists expected to gather for the world-famous fireworks display.
As one of the first major cities to welcome the new year, Sydney will showcase its multicultural identity and iconic harbour setting to a global audience.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore has shared details of the event, emphasising its significance. ‘Sydney New Year’s Eve is a wonderful celebration of our multicultural, harmonious, safe and inclusive community, and it helps us promote Sydney and our stunning harbour setting to the world,’ she said.
The event has been 15 months in the making, with countless hours invested in programming, creative concepts, safety measures, transport, and logistics.
More than 1,000 accredited personnel will work together to ensure the night runs smoothly and every detail shines to perfection.
The evening will begin with a traditional smoking ceremony led by Tribal Warrior vessels.
Starting at Barangaroo headland, the vessels will sail west to Circular Quay and finish at the Sydney Opera House. Native plants will be smouldered on board to symbolise purification.
This year’s celebration will spotlight the contributions of women, with a record number of female creatives involved, from technicians and producers to singers and directors.
Women aged six to 79 have contributed to the event, a milestone Mayor Moore proudly acknowledged: ‘From ages six to 79, women have been the force behind Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations this year.’
The night will also pay tribute to powerful women in Australian history, particularly Barangaroo, the Cammeraygal leader who symbolises the strong connection between Eora women and the Sydney Harbour waterways.
Sydney Harbour will light up with nine tonnes of fireworks launched from eight floating platforms and 80 new positions along the Harbour Bridge’s western side.
Seven kilometres of the harbour will glow with over 26,500 lights, including sky beams on the bridge, spotlights on barges, and LED-lit boats.
The family-friendly fireworks will feature eight minutes of dazzling pyrotechnics and bridge pylon projections of Barangaroo and her warriors, accompanied by a special soundtrack created by rapper and producer Nooky.
The music will include the voices of Nooky’s young daughters, Olivia and Calula, adding a heartfelt touch to the display.
At midnight, the festivities will reach their peak with a human and AI-generated representation of Barangaroo as a shapeshifting being.
This visual masterpiece will depict her transformation through ocean elements, synchronised with a choreographed dance and a soundtrack inspired by the rhythms of the sea.
With over 50 vantage points across the city, revellers will have plenty of spots to take in the breathtaking views.
While ticketed areas have sold out quickly, unticketed options such as Barangaroo Reserve, Darling Harbour, Observatory Hill Park, and Mrs Macquarie’s Point remain open to the public.
