You might be forgetting to clean THIS PART of your vacuum cleaner!

It’s a cruel twist of fate that the household appliance that we use to clean and eliminate dust from your home also tends to be the dirtiest. While you might think that simply emptying the bag is sufficient, it turns out that our vacuum cleaners also need their own cleaning attention.

Here, a young mum has revealed the moment she realised she had been cleaning her stick vacuum incorrectly all this time, resulting in a buildup of thick grime around the barrel.

The mother was so appalled by what she found that she shared images of it on a popular cleaning group on Facebook in an effort to warn other people from making the same mistake.

The photos she shared show her trusty three-year-old Dyson Absolute vacuum cleaner and a dust-filled plastic bag.

"I was emptying the canister and banged it a couple of times like usual then all of this clumped dust kept coming out for ten whole minutes," she wrote in her Facebook post.

She went on to say that she continued to pound on the can until the dust completely stopped falling out of the cracks in it. However, she advised against doing this because it can cause the equipment to break.

"But I needed to get it all out," she later explained.

Despite admitting she was likely to blame for the grime and dirt buildup, the mum confessed she has no idea how to prevent it from happening again.

She asked her fellow homeowners: "How would you even know it is in there? Am I missing a cleaning or emptying step?"

It would appear that other owners of Dyson vacuums have experienced the same kind of issue with the accumulation of dust in their own machines.

A fellow mum shared her experience in the comments section, writing: "The exact thing happened to me with my two-year-old vacuum. Maybe there wasn't anything in the original instructions because I follow them and would have done something to avoid this if it was advised."

Another member in the Facebook group wrote a comment and revealed that she had just given away her vacuum cleaner because the act of cleaning it took so much of her time and effort.

Others admitted to using leaf blowers and compressed air cans to clear the dust from their own machines.

Although you should clean the individual components of the vacuum more frequently, vacuum experts agree that it is a good rule of thumb to disassemble the entire vacuum at least once a year and give it a thorough cleaning.

I have a stick vac (Kogan) and love it but like everything else on this earth it needs to be looked after. I empty everytime I use and every couple of months disassemble completely wash in warm soapy water, out in the sun to dry, check the filter etc. Never had a problem and seldom use my Dyson barrel anymore.
Also volunteer at local Seniors centre and clean that one every six months or so as multiple users.
