You could be at risk: Discover the new disease threatening one in three people!

Disclaimer: This article cannot be considered medical advice. Remember to consult with your doctor for a more accurate diagnosis.

Our hearts are very special parts of the body, and we should all strive to keep them healthy and functioning correctly.

Early detection and prevention are crucial to avoiding heart disease, and one of the best things we can do is to be aware of the risks.

Recently, medical professionals have discovered cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKM), a new type of condition that could put some adults at risk.

It's the overlap between kidney disease, metabolic disorders (such as type 2 diabetes), and heart disease.

CKM is technically not a new disease but a new way of looking at how these three conditions affect each other.

The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that one in three adults in the US has three or more risk factors that leave them vulnerable to CKM.

Dr Chiadi Ndumele, Director of Obesity and Cardiometabolic Research in the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins University, further estimates that more than 90 per cent of US adults fall under the CKM spectrum.

According to him, a significant contributor to this high number is the increasing rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults and children across the US.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) supports this claim, citing that 42 per cent of adults and 20 per cent of children in the US are obese, and over 37 million adults have diabetes.

To classify the levels of risk for CKM, the AHA has developed a five-stage system to understand an individual’s risk levels better:

CKM has prompted the AHA to look at heart disease differently and to create an extended risk calculator for healthcare professionals to use when assessing their patient’s risk.

The old risk calculator predicted a ten-year probability of an occurrence of a heart attack or stroke among those aged 40-75.

But the updated risk calculator can now include those aged 30 and above and will predict a ten-year and a thirty-year probability of a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
Key Takeaways

  • Researchers have described a new type of heart disease called Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKM), which represents the overlap between kidney disease, metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes and obesity, and heart disease.
  • According to the American Heart Association (AHA), one in three US adults has three or more risk factors contributing to CKM, putting them at an elevated risk of developing the condition.
  • The aim of defining CKM is to facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment for people who have a high risk of dying from heart disease.
  • The AHA has devised a five-stage system to categorise people's risk of CKM, ranging from stage zero (no risk factors) to stage four (symptomatic heart disease). They have also updated the risk calculator for healthcare professionals to predict a ten-year and a thirty-year probability of having a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
