The New York Times has acquired Wordle, a website-only word game that has seen a recent burst in popularity, for an undisclosed price "in the low seven figures".

Its creator, former Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle, says the game will "be free to play for everyone" when it moves home.

However, the NYT statement, armed with a careful caveat, was a little less convincing.

Wordle will “initially remain free to new and existing players”, the company says.

Wordle is free for now, but there's a pretty good chance you'll soon be paying for it

The lone creator of the word puzzle phenomenon has cashed out, promising his creation will stay free. Its new buyer has other ideas.

I love this game also, and a lifetime of crosswords stands one in good stead. So far 17 goes 100%. 1 x 2, 7 x 3, 6 x 4 and 3 x 5. I agree the double letter words are the killers! My starter word is either adieu or stead, reasoning that getting or eliminating vowels is a great step forward. Cheers all and enjoy.
