Woolworths or Coles: Which supermarket has cheaper lamb?

The battle between Australian supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles has brought an early Christmas gift to Aussie shoppers this year—lower lamb prices than we've seen in years.

But which of these two retail giants will give you the most value for your money? Let's dive in and find out!

Woolworths

Woolworths is slashing the price of lamb leg roast from $10 per kilogram to just $8. According to the supermarket, this is the most affordable promotional price for lamb leg roasts since February 2017 and the lowest regular price since June 2013.

The good news is they're maintaining these prices until December 27th, so you have plenty of time to prepare and enjoy the savings! If you want to check more discounted offers by Woolies, check out the list here.

Coles

Meanwhile, over at Coles, a half-leg roast that used to cost $10 per kilogram is also now priced at $8 per kilogram. The supermarket has also made it clear on its website that this price used to be significantly higher, at $20.88 per kilogram back in September.

What's even better? Coles is extending these discounted prices until January! Who says the holiday festivities have to end in December? Enjoy your savings a little longer!

Lamb is a popular Christmas meal, and Aussies prepare it in various tasty ways to match the holiday season's warm weather. Here are some ways you can enjoy lamb for Christmas:

Roast Lamb

Roast lamb is a traditional Christmas favourite. A leg of lamb or lamb roast seasoned with herbs and spices serves as the main dish for many festive meals, usually accompanied by roasted vegetables and gravy.

BBQ Lamb

Since Christmas falls during the warm season, many opt for barbecuing lamb. Lamb chops or kebabs are marinated and grilled to perfection. The smoky barbecue flavours make it a great choice for an Aussie Christmas.

Slow-Cooked Lamb

Some people also choose slow-cooked lamb dishes like lamb shanks or lamb stew. These hearty and comforting meals are ideal for those celebrating in cooler regions.

This follows the recent news that Australia's sheep population has increased by 23 per cent since 2020, thanks to good weather and farming conditions.

As a result, lamb prices have gone down significantly. Nationwide, lamb prices at stores have decreased by 9.5 per cent compared to last year, and people are eating about 14 per cent more lamb.

However, this drop in sheep prices is causing problems for farmers. Many are deciding to slaughter their sheep on their farms rather than selling them because it's expensive to transport them, and the selling prices are low.

Key Takeaways

  • Woolworths has announced a reduction in the cost of lamb ahead of the festive season, with competitor Coles also dropping their lamb prices.
  • The price of a lamb leg roast will drop from $10 a kilogram to $8 at both supermarkets, marking the lowest regular price on lamb since June 2013.
  • Woolworths plans to keep the reduced lamb prices until December 27, while Coles will maintain the lower prices into January.
  • These price reductions are part of a broader effort by both supermarkets to reduce costs for Australians experiencing a cost-of-living crisis, particularly with the average Australian expected to spend $249 on food this Christmas.

Time to stock the freezer, slow -cooker lamb 😋 slits fill with garlic peices and fresh rosemary cook 6 to 8 hours falls off the bone

Perfect timing for Christmas, only a shame it didn't drop further & stay there.

An article on Channel 2's LANDLINE this week mentioned that many of the countries Australia exports sheep to are STOCKPILING meat. This reflects on exports, farmers have too much stock & slaughter sheep because this is cheaper than transporting them to market for little return & as we are aware, supermarkets buy meat cheap & profit greatly from selling this to the public.
