Woman reveals something “terrifying” happened to her while giving birth

The experience of birthing your own child is a physical, mental, and emotional journey like no other.

Each mothers’ labour and delivery experience is exceptionally unique to herself and is incomparable to the experience of others. While some may find the whole childbirth process relatively “easy and straightforward”, others had to go through more hurdles just to welcome their baby.

Like this one mum for example.

On the popular video-sharing platform TikTok, a 23-year-old mum shared the story of how something “terrifying” happened to her while she was pushing out her baby.

Bethany Collins gave birth to a healthy baby girl several weeks ago. Recalling her birthing experience, she revealed that one of her eyes “popped out” as she was pushing her baby.

As seen in the photos below, Bethany’s left eye was bulging out when she was at the hospital. According to her doctor, an incident like this has never happened before. Though, it is not entirely impossible.

According to the parenting website BabyCenter, the pushing and straining during childbirth can cause a mother’s blood pressure to rise, which may cause broken capillaries and bloodshot eyes. But don’t worry, these side-effects are generally harmless both to the mum and the baby, and they usually resolve within a few weeks.

Despite Bethany’s left eye popping out during childbirth, the mum said she did not suffer from any long-term effects. Her eye also went back to normal around six weeks later.

Her video on TikTok gained a ton of attention, amassing over one million views in just one week.

One fellow mum commented and shared her own experience, saying: “OMG! My eyes bled because I pushed so hard. I looked so scary.”

Another mum wrote: “This is why I closed my eyes!”

Meanwhile, a soon-to-be mum commented and said Bethany’s experience made her all the more nervous about childbirth.

On the other hand, some users pointed out that what Bethany did was actually called “purple pushing”, a method where the mum forcefully pushes down her baby while holding her breath.

Doctors do not recommend doing this, since holding your breath and pushing until you’re purple in the face is not the most effective, nor the most comfortable or natural way to give birth.

My kids took just 1 hour each from go to whoa. They both turned naturally and had to be caught as they entered the world. I was told they were textbook births and for the second I had a room full of trainee midwifes so they could see and experience a perfect birth. Mind you, I don't think it hurt any less, just was over quicker.:):)👼👼

Giving birth to my long-awaited children was wonderful.....hearing their first cry, touching them, loving them, feeding them, nurturing them.....such a privilege.
With my first, I developed very high blood pressure (family history goes back generations) which turned into pre-eclampsia. My daughter's birth was induced prematurely, with labour quite short.
After reaching second stage, I gave one push.
My blood pressure hit 240/140, so they urgently pulled my daughter out with forceps. I suffered a stroke, because of the pressure in my body, caused by the high blood pressure which caused blood vessels in my head to pop....complications were difficult, life-threatening. I'm still here though. Forty years later, the evidence is still there, although most people can't tell.
Not what you expect, or dream of.
