Wine now, whine later: Aussie tourist's restaurant blunder cost more than their entire holiday in Bali – don't make the same mistake!

Hold on to your wallets, folks, because this cautionary tale from a fellow Aussie tourist will have you checking your bill twice on your next holiday!

Picture this: a celebratory dinner overseas for your partner's birthday, a fancy restaurant, and a bottle of wine to toast the occasion. Sounds perfect, right? Well, not for this unlucky traveller who ended up with a bill that made their jaw drop…

In a viral social media post, the tourist recounted how they made a costly mistake that ended up putting a serious dent in their wallet. They had assumed that the bottle of wine they ordered would cost around $170 — what they deemed a reasonable price for a special treat.

But little did they know, they were in for a shock of a lifetime when they saw the final bill. The wine they thought was a steal at $170 turned out to be a jaw-dropping $1,700!

That's right, folks, a simple misunderstanding on the menu turned into a wallet-emptying nightmare.

As the tourist lamented in their Facebook post, he revealed that the cost of the wine ended up being more than their entire trip to Bali!

He wrote: 'The wine was consumed along with a delicious dinner, and at one point, the chef came out to introduce himself, which I did think at the time was strange, but I just assumed it was a nice restaurant and didn't think about it again. The bill arrived, I paid, and we left.'

The next day, reality hit hard when the tourists checked their bank account and saw a jaw-dropping charge of $2,050 from the restaurant. Cue the panic and disbelief! How could a simple bottle of wine end up costing so much?

That's when the truth came out - he’d read the menu incorrectly! No wonder the wine turned out to be a budget-busting surprise.

We can't even imagine the shock and horror of seeing such an exorbitant charge for a single bottle of wine… It's the stuff of nightmares for any budget-conscious traveller.

That's definitely a pricey lesson learned the hard way, and we bet the unlucky tourist realised that double-checking the prices on the menu is not just a suggestion, but a crucial step to avoid ending up with a financial hangover.

Find out where the locals eat, nowhere the tourist prices, at least never used to be.

Any country you visit that does not grow grapes or make wine is your heads up not to drink any. Drink the local beer - bottled or canned. Safer for your health and your wallet. Once paid more for the wine than the whole meal for 3 in Vietnam. My own fault, as I asked my friends what they wanted to drink. 🙄

I would love to know what the wine was maybe a penfolds hermatage

one needs to be a bit smarter than your average Bear.

A bottle of wine for even $170 in Bali .... really! Plus a bottle for $1,700 in Bali. Go Figure. If these people can afford a bottle of wine for $170 anywhere in the entire world then they have the money but fail at maths.

They are not friends ... are they! No friend does that to another. My suggestion is to drop them like bad pancakes and find yourself new honest reliable friends. Ones that do not break your bank account or your credit card for that matter.

Simple - check the price of everything you order and ALWAYS check your bill. No surprise on your bank withdrawal then!

just who do you trust these days? never been to Bali and might never go. not on my todo list
Please go Bali is a really beautiful place, with lovely people. I have been 5 times and have never had this problem. I am sure it was not a deliberate rip-off as this just not happen in reputable places and even street vendors. God knows where he went to dinner for those prices, as we have had the best food ever and service, for less than we we pay in australia. Breakfast, Lunch and dinner for 11 days at various places around Bali cost me $1,000 , including drinks such as cocktails , spirits, even desserts. This was November last year, and will be going again next year for my 7th time. Our fares too were $200 return by Jetstar, booked in February 2022, and we stayed in a two storey, villa with pool in a cluster of only 8, nice and quiet, even off main Kuta drag. The villa which was lovely too, had 4 bedrooms, 2 ensuite, costing for 12 days was $680, between 3 it came to $240 each. Sorry for raving on, but everytime I go to Bali, I dont want to go home. Any cheap rentals there lol?
