Who will take home the title of top retailer? Power Retail reveals SHOCKING results

Online shopping has become a favourite pastime for many of us, offering convenience and access to a vast array of products at our fingertips.

However, as we scour the internet for the best deals, we may question if our go-to retailers are doing everything possible to help us snag those coveted bargains.

Are they providing the best prices, discounts, and promotions to make our shopping experience worthwhile?

Fortunately for shoppers, retailer insight group Power Retail has taken on the arduous task of evaluating which retailers offer consumers the best value for their money.

Every year, Power Retail releases its list of the top 100 online retailers in Australia, ranking them according to their performance across various categories.

This year, the group's findings have revealed some surprising results…

In a remarkable turn of events, Kmart has surpassed Bunnings and secured the top spot on the prestigious Power Retail All-Star Bash's annual power list of Australia’s top 100 online retailers.

Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse followed closely behind, rising in the rankings and occupying the second and third place, respectively. Unfortunately, Bunnings, which had previously won twice the top department store category, dropped to fourth place.

The list also featured other popular retailers like JB HI-FI, Big W, Myer, Target, Coles, IKEA, Mecca and Cotton On, all ranking in the top 20.

Power Retail Head of Data David Fear said that Kmart impressively topped certain categories, which made it the number 1 retailer for 2022.

He explained: ‘This year, Kmart consistently ranked highest across categories of site performance, accessibility, payment and delivery options, traffic, and mobile app excellence, making them the most successful retailer in 2022.’

‘They have demonstrated a true dedication to mastering the mobile user experience and providing consumers with the most streamlined browsing and purchasing process.’

‘We look forward to seeing their growth and innovation in the coming year.’

Other category winners included Spotlight for Home and Decor Retailer, BCF for Best Sports and Outdoor Retailer, JB Hi-Fi for Best Electrical & Office Retailers, and Pet Circle for the top loyalty program category.

Power Retail developed a ranking methodology to create the Top 100, which assessed acquisition, conversion, fulfilment, and retention.

The ranking was based on various metrics, including the duration of the shopper's visit to the website, payment and delivery options, and mobile app performance.

According to Grant Arnott, the CEO of Global Marketplace, retailers are emphasising conversion as a significant area of focus.

He stated that this year, 86 per cent of the Top 100 retailers had incorporated product reviews on their websites, while only 42 per cent of those outside the Top 100 have done the same.

‘All of these factors contribute to customer conversion, as product reviews significantly impact consumer decision-making,’ Mr Arnott remarked.

‘Kmart showcased a detailed and progressive approach to conversion, which ultimately landed them the top spot and a high Net Promoter Score of 56.’

If they are looking at shopping online I'm not surprised that bunnings is down the list.
Their website is so hard to navigate and find something. I usually give up.

I'm not surprised that kmart came no 1, their website is easy to navigate and you get a quick reply to emails .
If I every receive an order where something is damaged they refund straight way without needing to take the item back, you just need to take photos.

But my biggest gripe is after you have added items to your cart and go to checkout I always find half my items are not available or I receive an email afterwards saying alot of my items are not available.

On the rare occasion, I buy from KMart I'm often put off by their exorbitant delivery cost often higher than cost of the item purchased

Bunnings has bigger stores now, but all they have is more of the same boring stuff they had before!
Great they are going in to
PET CARE lines, but as for tools, building & renovation bits & pieces / Bunnings is as boring as batshit!
And has been for years!
Total lack of innovation in any area whatsoever!!
A simple wall attached table than folds done for use as desk or dining, with shelves for storing cutlery, candle, salt&pepper, then folds back - no way will BORING BUNNINGS EVER be innovative or creative enough to carry this!
Not even a “beside toilet narrow cupboard for toilet rolls” does Boring Bunning bother with!
Exactly who are the grey, lifeless, unimaginative, dull blokes who run Bunnings? I even had to buy an outdoor Roller Belinda from overseas bcz Boring Bunnings has never ever come across an external nylon weave sun blind WITH BREEZE FLAPS so the blind does not rip off & fly away in strong winds - cyclones!

I find Bunnings' website terrible to check if there's stock available. Staff have even told me that it doesn't get updated on a regular basis.
Chemist Warehouse & Kmart have the best updated website imo.
Bunnings website is one of the worst sites to navigate that I have ever tried, finding anything that you are looking for is near on impossible. It is no better than their Warehouse size stores that you need a gopher or bike to get around and try finding a sales assistant when you need one!!

Chemist warehouse is good for updated information and their pricing but they have cut back on what products they will deliver , they want most of their sales to be click and collect, that would be fine if the closest store to me was not 420km away!!

The trouble I have with Bunnings website is that it doesn't recognise my address. The first time I ordered from them everything went swimmingly, the next and every time since it says my address doesn't exist. I tried calling them and the very unhelpful female on the other end said it worked for her so I should be doing something wrong. How? I know where I live, I'm a big girl now and can quote my address flawlessly, if their website doesn't recognise it how is that my problem? I've given up on Bunnings, my local hardware shop knows me and where I live, ok, it might cost me a dollar or two more but I get service.

I would just love one of those desk come shelf come foldaway. our experience on their website took us all afternoon, it was quicker to drive 30 minutes away and hope they had it in stock!!

The Marketplace items on the Bunnings website fooled me the first time I saw them. I saw what I wanted, drove to the store, only to find Marketplace items are not in store at all, in fact they are selling on commission from someone else. This is not explained on the item. Very poor.

JB Hi-Fi has great service. and no questions asked refunds. Big W also.

Chemist Warehouse has its supplements arranged by brand in the store, making it very difficult to find and compare the particular supplement you want. You have to search all the shelves, on various aisles, staff are not always available. Online is fine to compare - but then you get to the store and can't find it. That arrangement is good for the reps to check stock levels of their brand, but VERY unuser friendly for customers. Click and Collect is best for them, or do what I do, go elsewhere.

I always check aisle numbers for products before going to Bunnings. Their website is the slowest to load of any that I visit. Their products are too similar Eg: Camping chairs are now all of the fold into a bag variety that aren't comfortable to sit on.,so I had to go to KMart for their classic steamer style aluminium and canvas chair.

I write down the three best value brands from their website and go armed with my list. I usually get what I want. I persist because their prices are lower than elsewhere.

Bunning website and search function is a waste of time. Throwing up random suggestions and wasting time. I have two Bunning reasonably close to me. One I now, DON"T go to.....it was fabulous and now has staff I would not feed. Rude and disrespectful with terrible product knowledge. Many of the original stafff are no longer there. The other is excellent store is excellent! It's all about management and hiring the right people.!
