You might wonder, with the astonishing number of bakeries scattered across our glorious nation, which one makes the most delectable, mouth-watering meat pie in Australia?
Well, there’s good news for all the meat pie aficionados out there as the recent Official Great Aussie Pie Competition finally has the answer to our collective curiosity!
And the bakery with the best pie is…
Paradise Bakehouse from Queensland’s Bundaberg region!
Owned by Huyen Nguyen and her husband, the bakery swept away the coveted title of Australia’s Best Pie at the annual culinary showdown.
This gem found in the coastal town of Moore Park Beach clinched the honour for its scrumptious chunky pie. Quite the leap from their win for the Best Gourmet Pie in 2021, this time, they focused their efforts on the plain pie title.
'It was really a surprise for us,' Nguyen said.
'We (were) all crying.'
Emotions ran high as the bakery, which only started in May 2021, saw a huge victory along with the support of its customers.
'They support us... we feel so happy, it's like (a) family,' Nguyen added.
Paradise Bakehouse also recently opened its second store at Innes Park, Bundaberg.
Bakeries that joined the competition were allowed to submit three kinds of pies for the plain pie category—chunky, mince, or a combination of both—and were all judged for their shape, colour, size, meat quality, flavour, and the pastry’s quality in both hot and cold temperatures.
Joining Paradise Bakehouse on the podium were other esteemed bakeries:
In a similar competition, Country Cob Bakery—a humble establishment in Victoria run by Cambodian migrant brothers Chan and Ryan Khun—took out the top spot at the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) Best Pie and Pastie Competition.
The brothers’ Cambodian-inspired Fish Amok Pie won the hearts of the judges with its scrumptious fish curry pie crafted using fresh Australian barramundi—a tribute to one of Cambodia’s national dishes.
‘Fish amok or Amok Trei is a Khmer steamed fish curry with a mousse-like consistency,’ the bakery said on social media after their win.
