Sometimes the shortest distance between two points involves a pink toy car and a very patient police officer. That's exactly what happened to one Canadian bloke whose quest for a Slurpee became an international internet sensation.

Meet Kasper Lincoln from Prince George, British Columbia, who decided he was too lazy to walk to the local service station for a frozen drink and instead borrowed his flatmate's daughter's bright pink Barbie Jeep for the journey.

What should have been a simple errand turned into a traffic stop that would make headlines around the world.

'We were just kind of watching him, living his best life. He was just happy as a clam'

Andrea Stirgard, CBC News

The ride of a lifetime

On the morning of September 5th, witnesses spotted Lincoln sporting aviator sunglasses as he cruised down 15th Avenue near Nicholson Street—one of Prince George's main thoroughfares.

The Power Wheels Barbie Jeep Wrangler, designed for children aged 3-7 and capable of reaching 8 kilometres per hour, was quite the sight on a busy road.

Lincoln, ever the considerate driver, even used hand signals before turning since his pint-sized vehicle lacked electronic indicators. 'I waited until it was safe, and when I crossed the road I was doing my hand signals,' he explained later.

But the joyride came to an abrupt end when an unmarked Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser turned on its lights behind him. What followed was perhaps one of the most unusual traffic stops in recent memory.

From Slurpee run to internet fame

During the stop, police discovered Lincoln had a suspended licence and, after two breathalyser tests, confirmed he was over the legal limit for alcohol. He was subsequently issued a 90-day driving prohibition and faces a court date in December.

Lincoln maintained he hadn't consumed any alcohol that morning and had just woken up, noting he'd been drinking the night before. 'I didn't think you could get a DUI in a Barbie truck,' he said.

What happened to the Barbie Jeep?

Initially, police considered impounding the toy vehicle

Lincoln's friend convinced them to let him take it home

The ticket listed vehicle make as 'Power Wheels,' model as 'Barbie Jeep,' colour as 'pink'

Rather than being embarrassed by the incident, Lincoln has embraced his newfound fame, enjoying the memes being sent to him by friends and family. He's maintained a positive attitude about the whole affair, even laughing with police officers at the station about the situation.

The serious side of a silly situation

While the incident has provided plenty of laughs online, police emphasised the safety concerns, noting that motorists aren't used to looking out for someone 'at that level, the toy car level' and that other drivers were forced to go around him.

Legal expert Kyra Lee explained to CBC that 'toy cars constitute motor vehicles if they are powered by some sort of an engine', making the arrest legally sound.

Under both Canadian and most international laws, any vehicle on a roadway powered by anything other than muscular power requires a licensed driver and insurance.

What this means for Australian seniors

The incident highlights important questions about evolving transport regulations that are particularly relevant here in Australia. Our own laws around electric scooters and personal mobility devices vary significantly from state to state, with some requiring motorcycle licences while others allow riding with a regular driver's licence.

In South Australia, personal mobility devices including e-scooters became legal from July 2025, with no licence required for devices under certain specifications. However, in NSW, personal e-scooters remain illegal on roads and road-related areas, including footpaths and bicycle lanes.

Australian motorised vehicle laws you should know

  • Devices over 200 watts typically require licensing in most states

  • Even toy vehicles can be considered 'motor vehicles' if motorised

  • Laws vary significantly between states and territories

  • Always check your local regulations before using any motorised device

  • Alcohol limits apply to all motorised vehicles, regardless of size

Importantly, across all Australian jurisdictions, riding any motorised device while affected by alcohol or drugs can result in the same penalties as drunk driving a car.

The lesson behind the laughter

Witness Andrea Stirgard, a mail carrier who saw the incident unfold, captured the community's mixed reaction perfectly: 'We were just kind of watching him, living his best life. He was just happy as a clam... We were actually kind of jealous'.

While the internet may find the incident amusing, experts stress the serious message underneath the humour: drunk driving is drunk driving, regardless of the vehicle. Lincoln himself has taken this lesson to heart, offering his own advice: 'Don't drink and drive'.

Despite planning to contest the charges, Lincoln maintains his innocence, arguing 'It's an electric kid toy'. Whether his defence holds up in court remains to be seen when he appears before a judge in December.

The incident serves as both entertainment and education—a reminder that in our rapidly changing world of personal transport devices, the law applies equally to everyone, whether they're driving a Ferrari or a Barbie Jeep.

It's also a perfect example of how sometimes the most unexpected moments can bring communities together through shared laughter, even as they highlight serious safety concerns.

No, I have never seen a child`s Ferrari or a Barbie Jeep on the road, but must say that I had wondered if they are up to the task and apparently they are??. Anyway I hope others don`t follow this drunken idiot`s performance, the roads are dangerous enough as it is. Also I hope little kids don`t decide to be copycats.
