Many of you may know Brendan Fevola, or 'Fev' as he is affectionately referred to, as someone who used to dominate the AFL field. While Fev is no stranger to competing on-field, it seems that he is about to have a new off-field competition soon.
At the helm of Fox FM's Fifi, Fev & Nick–a programme under Southern Cross Austereo's portfolio–the host recently shared that he'd been privy to some insider information.
The intrigue? Sydney duo Kyle and Jackie O's massively popular breakfast show, currently airing on KIIS FM in Sydney, could potentially branch out to Melbourne as of next year.
Following an unexpected early morning phone call from a certain Sydney radio industry insider, Fev spilt it all out on Monday's broadcast.
According to Fev, the insider said, ‘You might have competition next year. Someone in our city is now gonna be in Melbourne—Kyle and Jackie!'
The brewing radio scandal didn't end there. Fevola didn't hold back, sharing his opinion honestly: 'That’s not the right DNA. That’s a Sydney show. Surely they’re not coming to Melbourne … What the h***?'
Co-host Fifi Box was quick to chime in, suggesting that a Melbourne-centric show would ideally have hosts located on-site in Melbourne.
Melbourne's own KIIS FM breakfast show already has fan favourites Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips steering the ship. If the circulating rumours are anything close to the truth, these well-loved hosts might just be replaced by Kyle and Jackie O, causing quite a shift in the city’s radio morning shows.
In response to the circulating whispers, a spokesperson from ARN (the company which owns KIIS FM stations) stated: 'We don’t comment on speculation and have nothing further to say.'
However, there might be some truth to the speculation considering the past interviews.
Kyle Sandilands has never masked his ambition to extend The Kyle and Jackie O Show's reach beyond Sydney's borders, covering the entire Australian network. He expressed his bewilderment on why the ARN hasn't networked his breakfast show across all cities in an interview back in 2021.
According to a news outlet, the duo signed again with ARN in 2019, securing a hefty contract to keep them on-air until the end of 2024.
In fact, they earn between $7-8 million each per annum, with each three-and-a-half-hour radio show raking in over $39,000 for each of them.
And it appears to be a worthwhile investment for ARN. The Kyle and Jackie O Show continues to reign supreme in the latest round of radio ratings, holding the number one spot in Sydney with a solid 17.1 per cent audience share.
For a bit of perspective, their primary FM competitor, WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda, only manages a 7.7 per cent audience share.
