'What are they trying to prove?': Aussie TV network in hot water after showing a strange weather map!

Australia is a vast land that welcomes all cultures and people from different walks of life.

However, a TV network's recent nod to diversity stirred up a controversy.

This decision sparked a significant debate among viewers and ignited discussions on cultural recognition in modern media.

SBS, a major Australian TV network, has introduced Indigenous names for cities on its weather maps.

In its new set-up, SBS's World News Bulletin would now display Australian weather maps with the English names of each capital city first, then transition to show the Indigenous titles.

Key cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth donned their Indigenous names—Warrang, Meanjin, Naarm, Tarndanya and Boorloo.

This change has been implemented since February 2023 and was part of an initiative to reflect Traditional Custodianship and acknowledge the country's history.

However, the new practice met strong criticism broadcasted on-air.

A 2GB radio listener named Peter voiced his confusion and concern during Ben Fordham's show.

Peter stated that the Indigenous names might only resonate with some of the television viewers.

Indigenous leader Warren Mundine weighed in on the topic.

Despite his appreciation for the recognition, Mundine cautioned against its use.

'It's like the idea of Welcome to Country. People think it is a nice thing, but now you have to do it before meetings, before conferences, before you give a speech, or on an aeroplane,' Mundine said.

Mundine recalled a time when the Indigenous names confused him on his travels.

'I was at the airport the other day, and I was trying to find what flight I was on, and the names are popping up all over the place, and I didn't have a clue what they were,' he said.

'If I am having a problem, the general public would have a problem and be annoyed at this stuff.'

Mundine's comments also highlighted another sentiment felt by some Australians.

They believe that the push for recognition could overshadow practical considerations and can lead to feelings of being labelled unjustly.

'We have not done anything wrong. We are the generation who got rid of the race laws and got full voting and citizen rights. We are the people who raise millions every year that goes into Aboriginal education, so why are we being abused?' Mundine asked.

'When you look around, most Aboriginals are doing OK. They are getting into universities and becoming doctors and lawyers and doing quite well.'

'It is only in the remote areas that they are struggling, but that is because of economic issues and crime that we have to deal with,' he reiterated.

The debate about the weather map extended to social media, where responses to the 2GB radio segment were divided.

'What are they trying to prove by shoving that down our throat? Virtue signalling at its finest,' a commen read.

Another dismissed the initiative as 'token silliness'.

On the flip side, many applauded the move, praising it as 'cool' and 'educational'.

'I love this. The languages of the lands are so diverse,' another praised.

SBS has defended its decision to keep the weather map.

Elder-in-Residence and Widjabul Wia-bal woman Rhoda Roberts AO emphasised the importance of revitalising First Nations' languages as a means of healing the nation.

'For me, it's a time of a new awakening that informs us all,' Ms Roberts shared.

'Behind every word, you will find information about the seasons, the place and the ecology of our wonderful country. It's more than education; it's also the science and the realisation that words can enlighten us all.

SBS's Director of News and Current Affairs, Mandi Wicks, echoed Ms Roberts' sentiment.

Ms Wicks stated that the network was proud of taking a step in representing First Nations in Australian media.

'The power of language to foster inclusion can't be understated, and this initiative will further share First Nations languages and cultures with all Australians,' Ms Wicks concluded.

SBS's weather map showed a microcosm of Australia and how it continues to grapple with its Indigenous history.

It also raised questions about how best to honour the past while navigating the present.

A hot topic. Appreciation, acknowledgement and respect are all key factors.

So with these in mind. Are we as a nation being disrespectful 🤔?

The indigenous languages are very varied and broad. There is no indigenous writing or spelling, thus is it true that these place names be only spoken, not written?

Food for thought.

So now we are dispossessing 96% of the population to appease 4%. This is craziness at its worst. Why have a referendum when some twit just pushes his own agenda anyway. This country has bent backwards since we acknowledged previous tragedies. Let’s just get in the modern world and be one. It may still happen if we are not careful and allow China in through the back door - then see what rights we all get.

Quite a few years ago when all this hullabaloo was beginning, the talk from Australian authorities gravitated towards the American situation with the indigenous Red Indian population and how their government was handling it. Now several years down the track and we the Australian people are stuck with "Welcome to Country", "Indigenous ownership of land" "Indigenous Rights" "Change of City Names" and so on.
Apparently, the Americans poured their money into reservations and upkeep of the indigenous people within them. You don't hear a call for Red Indians to Welcome USA citizens to country, you don't see USA city names changed, you hardly hear anything from the Red Indian population, and yet all those western movies were made with cowboys killing thousands of Indians....no complaints heard from the Indian tribes.
Everything here points to how the Indigenous People, be they from any country, think and act.
Some people point to the fact that Wales is part of the United Kingdom, but their cities and towns have Welsh names instead of English. There is quite a difference here, the cities and towns have never changed their names and the Welsh national language is far from English.

To me it causes confusion. I am sick and tired of hearing Welcome to Country every time someone talks on
Radio or TV. Why is it so important to acknowledge this now. They have been given all they have asked for, yet still want more. You are not the only one in this Country. If we keep doing this, all nationalities will want recognition in a country that is only their home because they chose to move here. Stop taking away from us who were born here.
In case you hadn't realised the indigenous were born here as well.

Very definitely food for thought.

As we originally came from Britain, the Indigenous came from Africa!

Modern DNA studies suggest that Australian Aboriginal people, Papua New Guinean highlanders and the Mamanawa people of the Philippines were all descended from the same group who left Africa, and settled in different places after a journey of several thousand years.

How the flying $#@^ can you give a city/town an indigenous name when the place didn't exist there in the first place?

Had another thought. Was this done Willy nilly or was this either approved of or even condoned by indigenous peoples.? Blind Freddy can see it as something that will garner dislike of people who probably didn’t have a clue it was done and I dare say couldn’t care less.

Coming to a TV station near you.

सिडनी - Hindi for Sydney. तेजी़ से - Melbourne, etc.

The way things are going, there will be more Indians in Australia than the Indigenous by 2030.
I think there are more Indians now. A lot of the so called indigenous registered to be indigenous just before the referendum thinking there would be something in it for them. A lot would not pass a DNA test. The Sikhs are some of the most generous people, always ready to help in a disaster apart from their feeding the homeless program. If this is an example of Indians, I know which race I prefer.

I do agree we could learn from these generous people

Apparently, you have not had any face to face dealings with Indian people. From 2016 to the beginning of 2024, I lived in shared accommodation "managed" by an Indian female landlord. She NEVER supplied rent receipts, addressed urgent repairs in a timely manner (washing machine, stoves, plumbing, broken widows in common areas and unsafe shower screens) , all in contravention of the Victorian Residential Tenancies Act. In addition, the residence was without power for over 48 hours because she "forgot to pay the bill". No compensation for spoilt food was forthcoming! She was ripping off the ATO all the time and I dobbed the bitch in. Now she runs an accommodation service through NDIS!

Her "friend", who was Sikh, pretended to be a "maintenance man" who took over an hour to change one deadlock. He thought he was tough, brandishing a curved kukri (?) knife. Didn't end well for him - battered like a Ganges mullet!

Then there was the incident where I was hit-run by a Punjab arsehole who ran a red light on Father's Day 2018, resulting in a broken left ankle that was displaced by 2 cms. He stopped, looked at me on the ground and promptly drove off. Thankfully, an AUSSIE bystander took a photo of his number plate and subsequently arrested on numerous charges. Two operations later, six weeks in plaster and another six weeks in a moonboot with rehab, I was able to walk again. I cost me my job.

If you wonder why I am racist, here is your proof. There are more instances but I don't want to break the already fragile internet!

Deport the lot of this scum!

We have to keep the mobs happy. Won't be long before we all have to learn and change from English to Black Fella language or whatever the hell call it. Funny thing is, none want to go back to the outback and live like their ancestors because they can't manage without white fellas booze, cigs, houses, electricity, cars, food, free medical, education, money and everything they are accustomed too. Most of them wouldn't last a week.

It wouldn't be "Black Fella" language.

Try Hindi, Arabic, Mandarin or Cantonese and you would be closer to the mark.

Typical ALP, ABC and SBS BullS^IT. They obviously didn't take note of the result of the "Voice" referendum. Hopefully the next government gets rid of this, 3 flag garbage, welcome to county, smoking ceremony and defund both the ABC and SBS. The ABC and SBS should be "pay if you want", same as foxtel IMHO!! Then 95% of the population will be better off!!

At least Warren Mundine has a bit of common sense and calls it as he sees it. Quite the opposite to uniting the country, this idiotic approach is proving to be so divisive that it has to be called out at every opportunity. ABC has proved to be the least trust-worthy of all networks and sadly SBS is following in their footsteps. Shame really as I do watch quite a bit of SBS and find docos about the indigenous culture etc quite fascinating. However it does not need to be shoved down our throats at every opportunity.

How can a Australian city/town be given a indigenous name NOW if the place doesn't exist before it was developed and built etc by the people who came to Australia and developed the towns and cities we all live and work in to make Australia the magnificent country that it is today???.

The usual imbecilic "Aussies". That is what social media is for I guess - the dim-witted, hateful people get to talk anonymously within the thicket of idiots.

If you watch SBS you will know:- They have been doing this since Feb. 2023. SBS is a multilingual and multicultural broadcasting media service to entertain all Australians. They broadcast news in 36 languages. That is their purpose - inclusivity. So, they show both, the English names and the Indigenous names - how the hell does that offend you? Just an excuse to spew forth your hate and self-importance? Cognitive bias of the narrow-minded?

What pisses me off is that there is NO English subtitles for foreign news on SBS World News. There goes your inclusivity out the window!
