As the cost of living keeps rising and Christmas approaches, it can be tough to stick to a budget. But never fear – our three favourite supermarket giants have got our backs!

Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI have all revealed their best tips and tricks for saving money on groceries before the holiday season hits. So, whether you're looking for a price freeze, discounts on gift cards, or ways to stock up early, we've got you covered.

According to ALDI, three-quarters of Aussies expect their spending to significantly increase in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Another 63 per cent say ‘their attitude towards managing budgets’ has changed over the last 12 months as costs keep going up.

To avoid the stress of handling money this holiday season, ALDI advises shoppers to stock up on non-perishables early so that they can spread out the costs evenly. They also recommend switching from branded products to cheaper alternatives to save some cash – they claim that shoppers could save an average of $663 just by making this one switch alone. Now that's what we call a bargain!

Oliver Bongart, the Managing Director of ALDI Australia, said that people can save money while shopping at the produce section. He mentioned that their fresh produce is at least 18 per cent more affordable than their rivals. ‘We offer a consistent price gap that means customers can enjoy the best value products for the lowest possible prices.’

At Coles, prices have been dropped on lots of essentials in preparation for Christmas – think cheese, bread rolls, chicken, and cream – and these hundreds of lowered prices will stay locked until January 31st 2023.

Coles is also offering 10 per cent off their $100 and $250 Coles MasterCard Gift Cards, which can be used to pay for groceries, household bills, petrol, and anything else that can be bought with a MasterCard.

Jonathan Torr, Coles’ Executive General Manager, says the discounts offered help people maximise their savings amid the continuous rising inflation.

Woolies, on the other hand, is pushing its Everyday Rewards program. The points can be converted into cash discounts on your next visit. Plus, for a monthly fee of just $7, Woolworths' Everyday Extra gives customers 10% off their shopping each month at Woolworths and BIG W, and triple rewards points on every shopping visit in the weeks leading up to Christmas!

And if those two offers weren't enough already, Woolworth’s price freeze program across 200 essential products – which began in June – is designed to ensure their product’s prices won't go up for the rest of the year. This saves the average customer between $250-$400, according to Woolworths.

I think it is going to be a lean Christmas, even with buying no brand names. It was the one time of the year to splash out a bit, oh well not any more.:(
