Want streak-free windows? This budget solution gives instant results

While we can all agree that clear, smudge-free windows are nice to look at, cleaning them can be one of the hardest and the most time-consuming tasks.

There are plenty of window cleaning solutions out there on the market, but most of them contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to you and the environment.

If you want to avoid these chemicals but still get streak-free windows, then this dish soap solution is perfect for you!

Cleaning tips from ‘experts’ are a dime a dozen on social media – some of them are more…unorthodox than others.

But one tried-and-tested solution to keeping your windows (this works on other glass surfaces too!) crystal clear is by mixing vinegar, dish soap, and water for a cheap and easy-to-make cleaning solution.

Now, we already know vinegar is an effective cleaning agent!

That’s because the acid in vinegar dissolves pesky stains and grime without damaging the glass surface. It also has antibacterial properties. Not to mention, it’s cheap and available at your nearest supermarket.

To start, mix two cups of water with 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap and 1/4 cup of white vinegar – enough to cover all the windows at the front of your home (if you're working with a larger surface area, just increase these measurements accordingly).

Then pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spritz it onto your window panes. Use a sponge to wipe away any excess liquid before taking a large microfiber cloth and rubbing it into any streaks or smears in a Z-shaped motion – to thoroughly clean the surface. The same process can be followed to clean other glass surfaces as well.

Voila! The entire process won’t take you more than 30 minutes, so no need to clear out your entire day just to clean windows.

Cleaning expert Corbin Mason-Smith, the owner of Superior Exterior Cleaning, said: ‘The amount of cleaning solution that will go on a window will depend on the weather. If it is a sunny day, then the glass will require more solution on it than if it is a cooler day.’

He also advised placing an old bath towel at the base of any window while cleaning – this is to catch any excess solution.

Tip
Also, it’s good to remember that cleaning windows with vinegar will leave them with a slight amount of residue, so it is necessary to rinse the window with lukewarm water after cleaning.

Another similar method told to me by my aunt a zillion years ago is this...Mix water and methylated spirits in a spray bottle ( I never measure, so just maybe a 1/4 cup of metho). Then just spray on and wipe off with crumbled newspaper. Works brilliantly! Thanks Auntie Ethel! :)

Now if only it came with a hunky young guy willing to come and let me watch him doing my dozens of glass doors and windows. My old applicator is now 81 with a crook back and non-stop groans and moans. My own physical problems mean I need help for the tasks but there is nothing wrong with my eyesight.
