Waitress Spills The Beans: The Incredibly Frustrating Questions Customers Keep Asking

Picture this: You’re a server in the height of the lunch rush, juggling drink refills, food order details and customer enquiries. What could make that situation more stressful?

As it turns out, customers ask questions that are already answered on the menu.

One experienced waitress from the United States, Grace, has recently gained attention on social media for sharing her top five pet peeves related to her job. Her online post quickly resonated with many who could relate to her frustrations.

Notably, her ‘number one’ frustration struck a chord.

'After working a double (shift) on Father’s Day... I have a lot of things I need to say.' Grace begins.

Her entertaining and enlightening video reveals the meal-time misdemeanours that irk hospitality staff the most. Customers who seemingly can't read a menu are coming in hot at number one.

How often have you sat at a restaurant, pondering various dishes, only to ask the waitress for recommendations or clarifications? Don't be ashamed—it's a common occurrence. However, Grace highlights just how absurd some of these enquiries can be.

She recounts instances where customers asked her for information easily available on the menu.

'Why are you asking me “does it come with sides” when clearly, right next to it, it says served with broccoli and mashed potatoes. Don’t p*** me off.' Grace vented. In our busy lives, it's easy to miss the obvious sometimes, isn't it?

Grace doesn't stop there, moving swiftly on to the next irritants. Patrons asking for plastic silverware due to concerns about the cleanliness of the restaurant’s utensils was particularly frustrating for her. It seems people forget that the plates and cutlery share the same cleaning process.

‘Do y’all not understand that you’re using plastic silverware to eat off of a plate that went through the same dishwasher as the silverware?’ she asked.

‘If anything, I feel like the silverware is cleaner than the plates because we have to run the silverware through twice.’ she added.

She also mentions the inefficiency of customers who request items separately, adding extra trips to the waitress's journey between the table and kitchen. Wouldn't it be easier for everyone if you just asked for all their condiments, sauces and extras in one go?

The fourth annoyance on Grace’s list is customers who ignore the social norms of dining out and seat themselves instead of waiting to be guided to a table.

Grace shares a few tales of patrons ignoring closing times and creating additional work and stress for the restaurant staff.

Grace remarked, ‘It just bothers me — you walk to the host stand, and we say we’re not sitting anymore because we close in two minutes.’

‘So you just walk and sit yourself and just wait for someone to come over there. We close in 120 seconds. What?’ Grace further commented.

Lastly, Grace's most divisive point is customers requesting straws in the middle of serving drinks.

This sparked quite an uproar on social media, with Grace's video receiving mixed responses.

Some users sided with thirsty patrons, suggesting their requests for straws were legitimate, while others, particularly fellow servers, shared their own tales of customers impatiently grabbing straws from their aprons.

‘Sometimes y’all forget to give straws, so yes, I’m asking.’ one person commented.

To which Grace replied, ‘Do you want me to just toss the drinks I still have in my hand, so you can have a straw? know you can see them sticking out of my apron pocket.’

Much of what the waitress has said comes down to good manners. I fail to see though why it's a problem for a patron to seat themselves, thereby saving the Staff the effort?

Maybe she just needs to remember who pays her wages. If people don't come because of the way she acts, the business will soon close.

That doesn't give people the right to leave common sense at the door and treat her poorly.

I definitely feel for her and all waitresses. We have always had wonderful service when we eat out, which isn't often now - too pricey as pensioners, and tip as much as we can afford. They have to put up with alot of crap.

Manners, courtesy and respect for someone doing their job serving you. That waitress you want to abuse in any way may not be feeling very well that day but has to come to work to keep herself fed and her rent paid while you are out there for your own pleasure. Yes there can be some that just don’t care but most are there to make a living and pay their own bills. Take your ‘chill pill’ before going out to be served by anyone and life will be so much easier.

Not meant to point the finger at anyone, just saying - And have you tried, every day, shift after shift, balancing two plates of food on one arm? Not easy and also painful after a while. Walking and standing all through a shift is also very tiring. So be patient while you are sitting down on your backside expecting someone else to cater to your impatience and your whims.

Yes, the waiter or waitress has chosen to work in hospitality but that could be to put themselves through university, or pay some bills, or feed themselves (sometimes not getting 3 full meals a day) or just pay their rent to have a roof over their heads. So we all need to have patience.
