Vintage names are making a comeback thanks to historical fiction shows

When it comes to naming babies, some parents name their newborns after names that are trendy at the time.

That's why it is not surprising that names such as "Noah", "Leo", "Olivia", and "Amelia" have been some of the most popular baby names in Australia in the 2010s.

But, did you know that "retro" names such as "Mabel", "Betty", and "Conrad" are making a comeback in 2022?

As it turns out, new parents are now exploring their ancestry and are naming their babies after some of their ancestors with "cool" names.

Jennifer Moss, founder of BabyNames.com, explained that the younger generation of parents are curious about their heritage as modern technology allows them to explore their genealogy.

Speaking to NBC’s TODAY, Jennifer said: "People are researching their ancestry online and finding these cool names that sound fresh because they haven’t been heard for so long."

The popularity of historical fiction shows, such as Bridgerton, The Gilded Age and Downton Abbey, have also contributed to the resurgence of the "antique names".

Jennifer said that it is not impossible that in the near future, children with early 20th century monikers such as Mildred, Lucille, and Gertrude, will fill up kindergarten classrooms.

Namerology founder Laura Wattenberg said that parents have a wide array of retro names to choose from.

She said: “Names today are all about sound.”

“It’s a very smooth, light and vowel-driven sound.

“That’s why you see so many Amelias and Olivias and so few Gertrudes and Mildreds.”

However, expecting parents of baby boys may have a hard time searching for a vintage name for them as antique male names are relatively rare compared to retro female names.

Laura said: “There actually are fewer boys' names to choose from.”

“If you look back at any given period, it’s going to be John, William, and James."

“Boys’ names didn’t come in and out of fashion in the same way that girls’ names did.”

She, however, noted that some parents are not opposed to big groups of voiced consonants in names.

“For instance, Conrad will stand out in a sea of names rhyming with Aiden,” she said.

My daughter has been doing our family tree and found one of our ancestors first name was Philpot. Her daughter was expecting twin boys and she mentioned the name and my granddaughter said no way mum. We have Logan and Lucian which I do prefer I must say. My daughter is going to paint Phil on a plant pot.😂

your first or christian name is such a personal thing and looking at some of the names that some children get saddled with It is obvious that the parents did not give a thought as to how the child would cope with the name. I personally hated my first and only name as a child because it was so unusual, I was very unsure of myself as a young teen and my name only added to that teenage angst, I just wanted to be called a normal name like the ever popular Sue !!

There is good reason why most of these names went out of fashion and should remain out of fashion. Most of them are cringe worthy, back then and still now🥴

I on the other hand love the fact that my name is unusual. I spent all my schooling yrs and and about 25yrs of my adult life before meeting somebody else with the same name as mine and that person was at least 20yrs older than me. I went on to give my children all unusual names as I wanted them to have names as unique as mine and they in turn went on to give their children unique names as well.

My main criteria when naming my kids was that I wanted to have names that could be shortened. There is no short form of my name (Heather) it's bugged me all my life, and I never liked it as a name anyway. Therefore my son is Nathan (Nate) and my daughter Jaylene (Jay). Even hubby was Phil, I was always the odd one out.;)

I was 18 before I met someone that shared my name every other one had been a Leanne, not a Deanne. It is not often that I come across someone that shares my name. My biggest joy recently was that it was in a book I was listening to.

Recently a woman approached my family member commenting on how beautiful her tiny son was and asked his name. A lovely boys name which obviously she did not like. She screwed up her face and her comment was 'Oh you poor thing, is that name for real', big sister 12, took offense and answered back 'Oh you poor thing, is that face for real'. We don't encourage cheek to older persons but in this case I can really understand her reaction.
