The spirit of the 'Crocodile Hunter', the beloved and dearly missed Steve Irwin, continues to live on through his son Robert Irwin.
In an awe-inspiring Instagram post, the young Robert Irwin showcased a fearless love for wildlife, reminiscent of his legendary father.
He recently shared a video of himself getting up close and personal with a massive rescued sea turtle.
Shockingly, this marine behemoth is so strong it could apparently 'bite right through' his finger!
This video originates from the renowned Australia Zoo's Wildlife Hospital in Queensland.
The same zoo was founded by Steve's parents, Bob and Lyn Irwin, back in 1970 and has since upheld the Irwin family's esteemed conservationist legacy over the years.
A loggerhead turtle named 'Captain Pete' is the latest addition to their aquatic patients.
'Check out one of our latest Wildlife Hospital patients—Captain Pete is the biggest loggerhead sea turtle I’ve ever seen!' Robert enthusiastically shared in the video’s caption, sparking curiosity about this endangered sea creature.
For those not familiar with the Loggerhead species, they are large oceanic turtles typically boasting a shell radius of up to one metre, mainly residing in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, and the Mediterranean Sea.
Their diet is comprised predominantly of bottom-dwelling invertebrates, and fascinatingly, despite their huge size, these turtles are known to undertake expansive ocean voyages. Just imagine a turtle travelling more kilometres than many of us in a year!
In the video, the 19-year-old conservationist shared that Captain Pete is currently undergoing rehabilitation with hopeful prospects of returning to the vast open ocean once he regains his strength.
As Robert assesses Captain Pete's condition, he motions to the turtle's almost mythically sized noggin. 'Have a look at the size of his head!' Robert marvelled in the video.
‘This is a long head; his head’s just massive. He’s an absolute dinosaur. Now, this poor bloke was not in a great way when he first came in, but he’s doing so much better now.’ he shared.
Robert continues his examination with an almost casual disregard for the chilling fact that despite suffering from injuries that left him weakened, the turtle packs an incredibly potent bite.
He stated, ‘We’re trying everything we can here at the hospital to get him back out into the wild.’
The video concludes on a hopeful note—feeding time for Captain Pete!
Robert disclosed, 'The plan is now, we are going to give him some squid,' part of a strategic recovery process mirroring the loggerhead's natural diet.
Satisfied, Robert points out that Captain Pete was 'actively looking' for the squid, a promising sign of his improving health. 'He’s really bright. He’s really happy. That is so good to see, and he’s a good boy.'
