Veteran TV Reporter Reveals the Rudest Celebrity He's Ever Interviewed - You Won't Believe Who It Is!

Celebrities have long been objects of fascination and adoration for the general public.

From movie stars to musicians, athletes to social media influencers, we often put these larger-than-life figures on a pedestal.

Despite the fact that we know so little about their personal lives, we are often all ears when it comes to gossip and rumours about them.

That’s why when beloved Weekend Today Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins shared a story about the rudest celebrity he ever interviewed, many viewers were all ears for the latest scoop!

Richard Wilkins has rubbed shoulders with a plethora of rich and famous individuals over his extensive career but they weren’t all pleasant experiences.

During a recent interview, the veteran TV reporter unveiled the person he deemed to be the 'rudest' in all his years in the industry: Simply Red's frontman, Mick Hucknall.

For a few of our members who aren't familiar with Simply Red, they are a popular British pop and soul band formed in 1985.

Their music first reached Australian shores in the late 1980s, with hits such as 'Holding Back the Years' and 'If You Don't Know Me By Now’. The band remains a timeless classic for many music lovers.

According to Wilkins, his encounter with Hucknall began on a friendly note when they met at a music industry function the night before their scheduled interview. Richard presented a gold record to the illustrious 62-year-old singer, and the atmosphere seemed amicable.

However, things took a turn for the worse the following morning, as the rocker refused to shake Wilkins' hand, stating, 'I shook your hand last night, I don't need to do it again.'

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, the veteran TV reporter shared: 'He's subsequently divulged that he used to hit it pretty hard back in the day, so I don't know whether he was on good stuff the night before.'

The television presenter took a valuable lesson from the experience, as his boss at the time advised him, 'If anyone ever treats you like that again, just walk out the door.'

And this wasn't the only awkward celebrity encounter Wilkins revealed recently. He also recalled a cringeworthy 2021 interview with Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves, during which the Matrix Resurrections star seemingly shut him down after Wilkins admitted he didn't understand the film's plot.

Key Takeaways

  • Wilkins shared that Hucknall refused to shake his hand during a morning interview, despite having done so the night before at a music industry event.
  • The television presenter suggested that Hucknall's behaviour may have resulted from substance use at the time.
  • This revelation comes shortly after Wilkins shared an embarrassing moment from a 2021 interview with actor Keanu Reeves, during which the Hollywood star shut him down after admitting he did not understand the plot of The Matrix Resurrections.

It truly goes to show that you can never predict how a celebrity interview will go - but no matter how rude or unreasonable a star may be, we know Richard will always stay professional and take it all in his stride.

There is a channel 7 presenter I cannot stand - constantly interrupting people, ministers in the middle an answer to a question he has posed to them, speaking to people with that look on his face that he knows more than them and seems to think he is always correct. I won’t mention his name here but I’m sure there are many on the same wavelength as me.

there are also presenters who laugh at what the person has said after they have left the interview about beliefs. It simply shows their narrow-mindedness, lack of knowledge and ignorance. It is plain rude to take the Mickey out of someone because you don't believe in something or think its woo-woo stuff. Just because they don't know much about a topic, don't put down what the person has to say.

I think some presenters forget that they are just presenters, representing news-gathering organisations.
Asking Keeanu Reeves to explain a movie plot shows Wilkins is dim.
Shaking hands on meeting someone for the first time is correct, but a second time isn't necessary.

In every walks of life, there is rude people!! I don’t understand those who can’t be nice to others. Maybe I’m a softy…….I can’t be nasty to people, is not in my personality 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I was surprised at him saying Mick Hucknall was rude. I’ve seen Simply Red in concert many times and always quite liked him. I guess I never met him but he comes across well, unlike some I’ve seen Lol

I'm with Richard on "The Matrix". I didn't understand the plot. It requires a lot of concentration. Perhaps I was a bit tired when I was watching it and couldn't take in the finer details of the story line.

Years ago when my daughter was lined up outside the then Chinese theatre in LA for six weeks, waiting for a Star Wars movie premiere Richard got in touch with her for an interview on American tv. He sent a car to pick her up and take her to the tv studio and after the interview he organised the car to drop her back to the line. She said he was really nice and very considerate towards her.

'Shut him down'? How? I've only ever seen glowing reports on Mr. K. Reeves.

If he wasn't nice at concerts that people are paying to go to then nobody would go so he has to be nice.

Everyone is different in person

I like Richard Wilkins, his knowledge of the music industry is phenomenal and he gets interviews with interesting people that no body else seems to manage.
