Energy drinks promise a quick pick-me-up, but some formulas that hit store shelves lately may have packed an unwanted jolt in the form of microbial contamination.
Brand Solutions Australia has issued an urgent recall of two drinks: Performance Inspired Protein Water Ready 2 Go Blueberry Lemonade Flavour (500 mL) and Performance Inspired Energy Water Go Time Fruit Punch Pow Flavour (500 mL).
Both were sold at Chemist Warehouse stores nationwide.
According to the recall notice posted on Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), 'The recall is due to microbial (Aureobasidium melanogenum) contamination.'
'Food products contaminated with Aureobasidium melanogenum may cause illness if consumed.'
Aureobasidium melanogenum, usually found in freshwater, is a common, dark-coloured, yeast-like fungus.
For the Protein Water Ready 2 Go Blueberry Lemonade Flavour, affected products are those with best before dates of up to December 28, 2023 including batch numbers 22300-1, 22300-2, 22300-3, 22301-1, and 22256-1.
As for the Energy Water Go Time Fruit Punch Pow Flavour, affected products include those with best before dates of up to December 26, 2023, with batch numbers 22299-1, 22298-1, and 22255-1.
Those who bought the affected products are advised not to consume them and return the product to the store it was purchased from for a full refund.
As for those who may have consumed one of the potentially contaminated drinks and are concerned about their health, they are encouraged to seek medical advice immediately.

In similar news, certain batches of cheese that have been sold in Woolworths nationwide may reportedly put those who consume them at risk of listeria contamination, an infectious bacteria that can cause serious illness.
Two 125g Camembert cheeses—the Unicorn Classic Camembert from Snowbrand Australia (trading as Unicorn Cheese) and Community Co’s French Style Camembert—have been recalled over possible microbial contamination, specifically Listeria monocytogenes.
These items have been available for sale in Woolworths stores in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and Tasmania, as well as independent stores like Natures Best, V & C Food Distributors, Bills Cheese and Yoghurts in NSW, and Our United Food Co in Queensland.
A few independent stores such as IGAs in Victoria and Queensland have also stocked these cheeses.
