Unwanted surprise in restaurant receipt leaves diner speechless

Dining out is a treat that many people indulge in to relax and enjoy the company of friends or family. However, the cost of dining out can add up quickly, especially when restaurants apply markups to their menu prices and add on service fees.

Unfortunately, diners are often left in the dark about these additional costs, which can leave them feeling confused and frustrated when the bill arrives.

For one Perth local, Claire O'Donnell, the shock of an unexpected service fee at a popular restaurant left her feeling more than just frustrated.

O'Donnell had gathered with friends at Rockpool Bar and Grill in Perth, looking forward to an afternoon of delicious food and great company. However, when the bill arrived, the group were stunned to find a service fee of $71 added to their already hefty bill.

Feeling betrayed by the restaurant's lack of transparency, O'Donnell took to social media to warn others about her experience. And while she praised the service and quality of the food, she couldn't help but feel outraged by the sneaky addition of an unexpected fee.

'The service was fabulous. No complaints about the food and the sides were easily the best we've had in ages,' she wrote, then adding: 'However, being charged a $71 service fee when we went to pay was a shock and an utter disgrace.'

O'Donnell's post on the Perth Foodies Facebook page garnered a lot of attention, with many fellow foodies expressing their support and outrage at the restaurant's service fee. People described the charge as 'ridiculous' and 'absolutely disgraceful’, with some even sharing their own experiences of unexpected charges.

Another diner shared their receipt in the comments, revealing a service fee of $449 on a bill of almost $5,000. The sheer size of the fee only added to the growing frustration amongst foodies, who felt that the restaurant was taking advantage of its customers.

In response to the backlash, the restaurant clarified that the service fee had been introduced during COVID and was noted on the menu and website.

'Service charges are commonplace across the Australian hospitality industry and cover various costs incurred by businesses, including penalty rate wages on particular days, higher costs of operating under particular circumstances, and the rising day-to-day costs of running a restaurant,' a Rockpool spokesperson told a news source.

'As the costs of doing business rise, restaurants are increasingly passing on these costs – regretfully so. We are fully transparent about service charges, which are noted on our website, menus, and receipts.'

However, O'Donnell felt that this wasn't enough and that diners should be made aware of such fees before they sit down to eat.

'People should know that places like this are charging you on top of their massive prices to serve you,' she said. 'We presumed service came with a meal, not as a side.'

While O'Donnell praised the quality of the food and service, the unexpected service fee left a sour taste in her mouth. She expressed her disappointment at the situation and said that she wouldn't be returning to the restaurant anytime soon.

A 'Service Charge' like this is a disgrace. Restaurant's costs are already factored into the price of the food they serve, if I went anywhere to eat and saw this 'Service Charge' I would get up and walk out and go somewhere else. This is certainly not the way to encourage people back to support the restaurant industry who, I agree, did it particularly tough during the Pandemic. It's certainly enough to stop me and most people from wanting to have a nice meal out somewhere. What is our country becoming?

Another money grab. We are not the USA. All cost should be upfront and included in the price. Then, we as consumers, we choose what we want to pay. It's a new cost that most people should/would not expect. Hidden in find print on a menu is not acceptable. The very least should be displayed prominently.. and also servers/maitre'd should make you aware. This should be investigated by all State's consumer agencies. To put it bluntly, it's a grub act and smells. Totally un Australian.

I think this is Australia's way of getting the mandatory tipping of 10% that the Americans do. Only we are calling it a surcharge.

I know alot of restaurants and cafes charge a surcharge on Sundays and public holidays which are supposed to cover the staffs penalty rates for those days. My daughter works in a Cafe and doesn't matter what days she works and she works most Sundays , she receives the same ammount of pay

They need to let their patrons know of the extra charges before ordering either on a board at the front if the store or in the menu

Ridiculously expensive to start with, THEN a service fee? I don't think so... I wouldn't go there.

Maybe its time that restaurants and the like start putting up a sign displaying their Costs Like "Rent" "Electricity" "Advertising" "Communication" just as a baseline so that customer can see or have a better Idea as to the cost of running such a business. But they should also be more open about their fees like service etc should be on a sign in the window and at the entrance way.

This has been going on for quite a while, there have been plenty of complaints on Social media , in newspapers etc. This and lack of funds is the reason behind why we very rarely go out these days. The common person can't afford the meal price without the so called service fee added..

We found this when on holiday in the US a service fee was added but then they also had a note on the end of the bill for where to ADD a tip. Seems to me we are copying the US again.

I wouldn't go to that restaurant they should tell you before hand of the service charge and in any case I thought the business of a restaurant is to serve you not charge extra to serve you

My first experience with this was when our whole family went to a restaurant and asked beforehand if we could take a birthday cake, they said no problem .

When we went to pay the bill there was a $50 cakeage charge. This was because they took away the cake and cut it up.
We would have been happy to have cut it ourselves

Well that puts pensioners out of the race of having dinner out any time soon, with the price of everything going up, half the time you can’t even afford to buy a cup of coffee, and a fee of $71, is a fortnight of food for me 😪
Dining out is a treat that many people indulge in to relax and enjoy the company of friends or family.

You know what they say, dining out can be a real treat, but it can also break the bank. And when unexpected fees are thrown into the mix, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

And while we do understand that restaurants have taken a hit during the pandemic, we deserve transparency when it comes to pricing.

So, members, next time you're out to eat, keep your eyes peeled for any hidden charges. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions, because, at the end of the day, you're the one paying the bill.

Americans are now demanding/expect 20% or more for their tips in a lot of places.
