The legacy of the legendary Australian cricketer, Shane Warne, continues to live on, not just in the annals of cricket history, but also in a life-saving initiative that is set to be launched at the iconic Boxing Day Test.
The Shane Warne Legacy (SWL) Heart Test initiative will be officially introduced at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), offering free heart tests to cricket fans at 23 locations around the stadium.
This initiative is a poignant tribute to Warne's One Day International (ODI) playing number and is expected to save thousands of Australian lives by identifying potential heart issues before they become life-threatening.
The campaign, in partnership with Cricket Australia, will be available from the first to the fourth day of the Boxing Day Test.
The tests, provided by SiSU Health, will take just four minutes to complete and will focus on cardiovascular health, measuring factors such as blood pressure, heart rate, diabetes risk, and body mass index.
The results can be viewed on a screen during and immediately after the test, providing immediate feedback to the participants.
Jackson Warne, Shane's son, expressed that this initiative would be a legacy his father would be immensely proud of.
'What a legacy dad has now left. He probably thought he was leaving a legacy as arguably one of the greatest ever cricketers or the greatest ever leg spinner, but now his legacy is saving lives,' he said.
'How cool is it going to be when people can go around and say Shane Warne saved my life?'
'That’s all because of a free heart test from SiSU Health, and to know there’s going to be 23 locations around the Boxing Day Test, I think Dad would be honoured with that.'
The SWL was launched by Warne's children—Jackson, Brooke, and Summer—in November to 'preserve the memory' of the late Australian leg spinner through a series of philanthropic initiatives aimed at improving the lives of many Australians.
The Shane Warne Legacy Heart Test Campaign, which will provide free heart check-ups for Australians over 40, is the first of these initiatives.
By the end of 2023, the SWL aims to have delivered 23,000 free four-minute heart tests, with the goal of providing 500,000 Aussies with a check-up next year.
The ultimate goal is to make these four-minute heart tests free for all Australians over 40, similar to the national bowel cancer screening program.
It is estimated that about 45 per cent of those taking the rapid heart test will be referred to their GP for further assessment, thereby reducing the risk of preventable heart-related deaths.
The sudden death of Shane Warne from a heart attack at the age of 52 in March last year sparked a surge in public interest and awareness of heart disease and heart attacks, referred to as the 'Shane Warne Halo Effect'.
There was an increase of 62 per cent in heart health checks from March 2022 to January 2023, reflecting the impact his sudden passing had on the community.
Nick Hockley, CEO of Cricket Australia, expressed his delight at partnering with the SWL and launching the initiative on such an iconic day on the sporting calendar.
'Shane is greatly missed here in Australia and around the world, and we are grateful to the Shane Warne Legacy and the Warne family [for] partnering with us to help make a positive difference in his honour,' he said.
'I encourage everyone to come along to the Boxing Day Test and take part in the Shane Warne Legacy Heart Tests and to always seek the advice of your medical professional on this and other health issues.'
Fans attending the Boxing Day Test are urged to wear their floppy white hat and tip them at 3:50 pm each day to remember Warne’s Test number of 350.
