Unexpected snake encounter catches Australians by surprise

Slithering without warning, a python took Aussies by surprise as it was caught on camera while it was digesting its meal, leaving people wondering what it had to eat.

A photo of the reptile amassed attention online after it was shared on the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers Facebook page.


'Thanks to one of our followers, Paul, for sending this awesome photo of a python with a belly full of food,' the image's caption stated.

‘They believe it was a large possum that the snake had eaten. The snake was quite happy laying up for the next few days digesting its big meal.’

The snake catchers suspect the meal was a large possum, noting the snake's content demeanour as it digests its feast.


One observer wondered, 'If he swallowed a possum, it must have been a whopper.'

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers cautioned: 'It's that time of year when snakes are looking for a big feed.'

This active hunting period (during the tail end of summer) is when their metabolism slows, which means they may be more active during the day, posing a threat to daytime sleepers like possums.

While pythons typically prey on small animals, they rarely target humans and only resort to attack when they feel threatened.


Fascination aside, remember to ensure safety first when encountering a snake. It’s not every day that you get to see the overwhelming sight of a python after devouring its meal.
