It's no secret that in this day and age, it is important to save money. A lot of us here at the SDC have had to become increasingly savvy with our finances to make ends meet and help alleviate the financial burden of a comfortable lifestyle.
That being said, some of us still find it hard to draw the line between wanting to save money and potentially risking our health in the process.
And that's exactly the thought that sprang to mind after learning of the recent story of one frugal traveller who was unexpectedly slammed for cooking 'a cheaper' meal in his hotel room – using an incredibly unlikely kitchen gadget.
In a post on the business-related social networking site LinkedIn, Alexander showed his fellow 'business travellers' what he was doing to save money during his stay in a hotel.
‘I'm travelling for work, and instead of eating a fancy dinner out, I've decided to cook a cheaper meal in the hotel room,’ he wrote.
‘Even though the hotel room didn't have a kitchen, I managed to use the coffee machine to cook chicken with butter and garlic. Although my company allows me to expense dinner while travelling, I wanted to save money because I know every dollar counts.’
Alexander added that the decision could hopefully help him save ‘every dollar’ and take another step closer to getting that raise he wants.
It goes without saying that when Alexander's post made its way onto Twitter, many users were horrified over the 'absolutely most unhinged' decision the traveller had made.
One user said: 'It’s the little things that give you salmonella.'
'That decision-making would definitely make me not promote someone,' another wrote.
A third joked: 'In a past life I ran a small hotel. People doing this was literally the worst - more people do it than you’d think.'
This is not the first time a traveller was ridiculed on social media for an 'unhygienic' act.
One traveller confessed that she used her hotel room kettle to wash a period-stained pair of underwear back in 2018 in a popular forum on Reddit.
‘Forgot to pack knickers so I came up with a good way to quickly wash them. The hotel kettle!’ the user wrote alongside a picture of underwear submerged in the water.
It turns out, many people in the hospitality industry were already aware of what sneaky travellers do.
According to ex-flight attendant Charlotte, the unexpected habit became normalised — when travellers didn't bring enough clean underwear on a trip.
She shared: 'Washing your underwear in a kettle... Hear me out, I was an air hostess and I’ve done a lot of travelling around the world.'
'I never washed my underwear in a kettle but I can tell you now there’s a lot of people who have.'
'Basically stick your old dirty underwear in, turn the kettle on, let it boil away, maybe put some soap in and it does its thing.'
She then claimed that many people who work in the travel industry always talk about how some guests can be 'filthy' with the hotel kettle, with some leaving some 'traces' of filth from their dirty underwear inside the kettle.
'It always went around the crew that if you forgot your underwear, you could easily wash it in your kettle,' Charlotte continued.
'So maybe think twice when you’re putting the kettle on in the travel lodge next time.'
Charlotte's wife, Sarah, joined the discussion, saying: 'Worst part about this is... All I’m thinking is how many of you guys are thinking, "What could I do the next time I forget my knickers? This is what I’m going to do".'
'Don't deny it.'
Stunned by this revelation, many people said they would never use a kettle in a hotel room again.
One person wrote: 'Heading straight online to buy a travel kettle because I trust nobody.'
'That has knocked me sick,' another said.
A third chimed in: 'Never using a kettle that isn’t from home anymore.'
'I’m crying. Can’t have hotel coffee or tea ever again,' added one more.
Expert opinions need not be sought on this matter: considering the many functions of a hotel room, this particular one is totally off-limits! Cooking in a coffee machine and washing your underwear in the kettle were definitely not the safest choices to make.
Members, if you should find yourself in the same situation, we recommend politely asking the staff at reception for a few essentials to get you through your stay.
It might save you a lot of headaches and – possibly – a stomach-turning surprise!
