'Trapped in poverty'? New statistics reveal grim picture for Centrelink users

In a country as prosperous as Australia, it's a harsh reality that some of our fellow citizens struggle to make ends meet.

The latest findings from Anglicare Australia's 2024 cost of living index painted a grim picture for families and individuals relying on Centrelink payments.

The report's analysis prompted urgent calls for the government to increase JobSeeker payments and other income support forms, as the current Centrelink rates are insufficient to cover necessities.

The analysis compared essentials—rent, food, and transport—with Centrelink's current income support rates.

The results are alarming: a family of four, with both parents on JobSeeker, would fall short by $17—which may force some to live in unsuitable accommodation and cut back on essential household expenses.

The situation is slightly better for a single parent on the Parenting Payment, for they will have an extra $24 after covering rent, transport, and food—roughly $3 per day for additional expenses.

Meanwhile, a JobSeeker recipient sharing accommodation would have $18 left each day.

However, the report highlighted that this amount is insufficient to help them move into a rental on their own.

The housing market further exacerbates the cost-of-living crisis, as average rent costs have surged by more than 50 per cent since 2020.

The steep increase in housing costs made it difficult for those reliant on Centrelink payments to secure accommodation.

Anglicare Australia's Executive Director Kasy Chambers expressed concern, stating that it has 'never been harder to live on JobSeeker and other Centrelink payments'.

'That's why Anglicare Australia has been calling for years for the government to raise the rate of Centrelink payments above the poverty line,' Chambers said.

'These payments have been too low for too long, trapping people in poverty instead of helping them escape it.'

As Centrelink payments do not cover basic costs, individuals and families skip meals, forgo necessary medical care, and cram into overcrowded homes.

Some are pushed into debt cycles as they struggle to keep up with rising costs.

Anglicare Australia is not alone in its call for action.

Social justice and welfare advocates also agree on this and urged the government to raise the rate of Centrelink payments above the poverty line.

'These numbers show us that Australians doing it tough need real action and leadership. That means raising the rate of Centrelink payments, ending unlimited increases, and building more social housing,' Chambers stated.

'We must raise the rate of these payments. Without action, people will be pushed even deeper into hardship, poverty and homelessness.'

These measures are not just about providing financial relief; they are about upholding every Australian's dignity and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a stable and secure life.
Key Takeaways

  • Anglicare Australia's analysis indicates that families receiving Centrelink payments, such as JobSeeker, are struggling to afford essentials like rent, food, and transport.
  • A family of four with both parents on JobSeeker cannot meet these essential costs, falling short by $17, leading to unsuitable living conditions and insufficient food.
  • A single parent on the Parenting Payment would have only about $3 per day left after covering the cost of rent, transport and food, while JobSeeker recipients living in a shared house may have financial leeway.
  • Anglicare Australia urged the government to raise the Centrelink payments above the poverty line to prevent people from being trapped in poverty, debt, malnutrition, and housing stress.

I must agree that there are jobs available, but a lot are not suitable to older job seeker people, who often have health issues, or like my sister have suffered a work injury, and have problems with mobilising, standing on concrete, heavy physical work. Even sitting at a desk can be hard as getting up and down off a chair is difficult for some people. These people should be on a disability pension, but it is almost impossible to get one these days due to the centrelink workers who think they are superior to anyone on benefits and even though they have no medical or other health related skills, they deem people not incapacited enough to qualify. My sister has provided so many drs certificates from her dr, specialists, medical imaging, most of which she has had to pay for out of her already stretched job seeker. I’m sure Centrelink aim to keep people on jobseeker until they reach pension age, then they walk them on the pension, which again is less than the disability pension. It is a vicious circle, run by people who mostly don’t give a stuff about anyone but themselves. The government is more focused on giving cash handouts to working people for having a baby, free childcare etc, which I believe is not means tested these days, even really wealthy people can and do access it, than on helping anyone living below the poverty line. What about all the social housing they were going to build, don’t think any of it has been started yet? There are building companies going bust who could benefit from a government contract to get some houses up, the sooner the better. They don’t have to be mansions with every mod con, just basic houses with essential services like cooling and heating and running water, screens, floor coverings. Better than being homeless by a long shot.

Im actually gobsmacked at the majority of the comments here.
Measuring jobseekers as all being dole bludger, cant be arsed getting jobs, should only get a payment for 6 months.... WOW ......
Well let me tell you ignorant people about 40% of us counted in the numbers of jobseekers shouldn't be on it, its because the government has made it so hard to get DSP that they are on it because its the only option after sickness benefit was taken off the table.
I receive 986 a FN and 800 of that is rent, the remaining 186 is to keep my car on the road for medical appointments, fuel, medicines , bills, insurance and if im lucky food. I have numourous injuries after a speeding 5 tonne truck failed to stop at Red Light and wiped me out leaving me with unimaginable injuries , and there are many just like myself who are kept on jobseeker even though the Drs from Centrelink itself gave me an assessment of 0-8 per week i could possibly work if a sedentary role, but with the type of injuries, impairments etc i have, I cant even do that. So don't put us all in the same category because its not apples for apples in this group call JOBSEEKERS and its disgusting we are living in poverty in this country.
And don't get me started on the money that is given to other countries, the $63M to advertise about vapes and under age kids using them, where are the parents . The detainees who are mostly criminals being kept here with our tax money, yes I paid taxes when I could work, these people get 3 meals a day, a roof over their head, we have the biggest percentage of homeless including families with kids who are in cars , mental health issues but noone seems to look at all of this.
Jobseekers payment for myself is not a liveable income, yes it is income to the ignorant ones who say it isn't, this is what I live on through no fault of my own.
get out of your head thst every jobseeker is alike because the 40% i speak about all have a similar story and do you know why they make it hard to get DSP; because its more money. It should be increased substantially before its too late for some because it ain't an easy ride that's for sure

I do not really think that this is the appropriate forum to begin to tell other people, whom you know absolutely nothing about, nor have even met, how to go about living their lives and whether they are in a position to secure a job or not. Please have some respect for others as well as their views and opinions. If everyone could just stick to the topic - it will be much more pleasant for everyone participating.

I'm 62 and on jobseeker.
Too young for pension, too old to be employed.
I'm the same - turn 63 this month and my health is in the shitter as they say.
Heart problems, Emphysema, spine problems, major hearing loss, eye sign going, plus have long term mental health problems. And I'm stuck on JobSeeker.
Have tried asking for help in filling out medical form for "Disable Payment" and all they said was "Go Online and fill out form".
Bit hard when you don't fully understand what they are asking for.

What if you have cancer and cant work?I was 60 and just got a job YAH and the next week I had cancer.Think about some one else other than yourself for a change.GO DOGS (thats WESTERN BULLDOGS)
There's an easy answer to this problem....anyone struggling and able to work....get a job !! 🤐😏

We are heading towards a Country full of people who get paid too much to sit on their backside and do NOTHING. All of these payments are plenty for people who don't squander their money on smokes, alcohol, tattoo's, drugs. It was NEVER meant to be enough to live on, it is just to get you enough to get a JOB, you know that thing that does pay the bills and give you a better lifestyle, but hey if you want to whinge do it quietly because we responsible people ar sick of hearing you say you don't have enough. I have just returned from a trip to Sth Africa, send the unemployed over there and they will be given one hell of a lesson in HUMILITY, they put Unemployed Australians to SHAME. If you are sick or have injuries, there are things for you as well to do.
Very critical response to a common problem without any thought about the difficulties some people face. Obviously the deserving and undeserving poor without any consideration or thought to those at the lowest level, the sick and aged etc. we are not South Africans and don’t have such a societal structure

I'm with you on this one. Can't believe some of the people here. We are lucky enough to have a safety net system here. Other countries have absolutely nothing.
Someone here says they have applied for over 500 jobs, another person says they have applied for 87 jobs.
Like Albert Einstein once said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and and expecting a different result".
I'll bet their definition of applying for those jobs was 2 or 3 mouse clicks to send their resume through and that would have been it. Probably took them all of 30 seconds on each application if that. They are obviously not serious about getting work.

Thank you, finally a person who is not blinded by the poor people and their constant give me, give me, attitude. Like I said these payments WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE ENOUGH TO LIVE ON, JUST GET YOU TO YOUR NEXT JOB.

Getting back to the cost of living....

Apartment rental in Sydney's CBD. Two bedroom, two bathroom, no parking. 212/57 Liverpool Street, Sydney, NSW 2000. AUD $5400 per month.

Apartment rental in New York City's CBD. Two bedroom, two bathroom, no parking. 7 Essex Street, New York, NY 10002. AUD $10,534 per month.

And Australia's renters think they have a raw deal! I am comparing apples to apples here. And don't bring up the fallacy that New York City is a much better place to live than Sydney!

most place's now won't accept Job application in person or even via the post, it all has to be completed via a Job Provider or online.
