The second driver even spoke to her in a condescending manner, as if she were at fault for her inability to see.

The frustration and embarrassment of the situation overwhelmed Chanelle. She shared her experience in a video, expressing the emotional toll it took on her. 'I got off the bus and basically had a breakdown. I had to build up the strength to try again. I was in tears,' she told Yahoo News Australia. 'It was the worst experience ever. It took me a 40-minute bus drive to calm down. Society is the biggest barrier we face, it’s not inclusive. We live in a world not set up for disability. The anxiety gets overwhelming, it can be exhausting.'


Chanelle's predicament is not an isolated one. According to the latest ABS figures, 5.5 million Australians have a disability, and Vision Australia reports that 453,000 people have a visual impairment—a number expected to rise to 564,000 by 2030. This growing demographic underscores the need for public transport systems to adapt and become more accessible.

Translink, which operates Queensland's bus network, has acknowledged the issue and is exploring solutions, such as digital hailing systems, to assist those with impaired vision. They have also installed Near-field Communication (NFC) tags at bus stops, which link to webpages providing service disruption and real-time arrival information. While these are steps in the right direction, the onus should not be on the disabled to adapt, but on society to create an inclusive environment.

The outpouring of support for Chanelle in the comments of her video suggests that the public is ready for change. Suggestions like larger bus numbers and audio announcements at bus stops are simple yet effective measures that could make a significant difference.

Well there's an opportunity for someone to invent/install a bus number announcement system in buses.
I was thinking the same. Every time the doors open, they should announce the number and name of the destination.
This would also assist the elderly, foreigners, or anyone else who cannot read or speak English.

Exactly, it is done for trains, so why not buses? Some people clearly have trouble with vision so it should be announced. 🎤 I am fairly certain there used to be conductors on buses. Does anyone remember.
 
She is right. Public transport is very unhelpful if you have a disability. In general, people are in a hurry going places and don't want to be slowed down by someone taking too long to board or leave a bus or train. Of course there are the good natured ones who surprise with help for me with my shaky hands.

Yes I remember when buses had conductors, at least in the cities and probably major towns. Now only having drivers can be a problem for anybody, but more so for people who have a disability, if the driver can’t be bothered with offering any help to customers who need assistance. Like every service there are many helpful, kind, caring drivers, and there are drivers who are only there for the money and don’t give a stuff about their customers.
 
How hard is it be kind to anyone who is asking for a little help. How dare this bus driver treat this lady this way. What a disgusting human. He must have known the lady was sight impaired l am sure she would have told him. Why talk down to someone. It costs nothing to be kind to each other. I do wonder how people with walkers manage to climb the stairs on and off buses. Fortunately for myself l still have my husband to take me where l need to go. If l did not have him l most likely would not go anywhere except for a walk each day. I would have to shop on line. Please be kind to people who need assistance. Kind regards to all Vicki

I exited a bus with a 9-month-old baby in my arms, a bag and an umbrella stroller folded up when I was young. I tripped from the first step down and landed on the footpath. Thank God I had my hand behind my baby's head which protected it from hitting the footpath. My knees were grazed and bleeding and my baby screaming. The bus driver shut the door and left without even asking is the baby ok. Two elderly gentlemen stopped and helped me get up and called me a cab. When my father who I was visiting rang the bus company they told him the driver is not allowed to leave their seat. His reply was, well I hope the bus doesn't catch fire.
