This 'ugly' Kmart top has shoppers buzzing: ‘I don’t understand these’

Fashion is subjective, and what one person might find appealing, another might find utterly distasteful.

Case in point: A recent item from Kmart had shoppers laughing, confused, and even a bit outraged.

But what’s the item in question?

It’s Kmart's Long Sleeve Openweave Shrug ($15)—a top that has left many scratching their heads and others defending its unique style.

The Openweave Shrug, which features long sleeves but stops just under the collar bone, leaving the chest completely exposed, has been dubbed by some as the 'ugliest top ever'.

The ‘ridiculous’ design has sparked a wave of hilarity and bewilderment among shoppers, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts.

One woman, after spotting the top on the Kmart racks, asked, 'Is this worn alone or with something?'

Her post quickly garnered attention and hundreds of comments from equally puzzled fashion enthusiasts.

One commented, ‘You may be arrested for indecent exposure if worn alone.’

Some of the comments were filled with humour, with one user joking, 'Finally a shirt for us who have cold arms and hot b****.'

Another compared the top to a doily, saying, 'It's giving doily vibes. You know the lacy things that the grandparents had on the tables.'

Another agreed, ‘Looks like the dishcloth my nan taught me to crochet in 1980.’

The $15 price tag also raised eyebrows, with one customer pointing out that full t-shirts were available for less.

‘Sleeves with a joining bit? Certainly can't be classified as a top! They have full t-shirts for less than this price,' one said.

'Literally don't understand these,' another said.

However, not everyone was quick to dismiss the Openweave Shrug. Some shoppers pointed out that the shrug was part of a set and was meant to be worn with a matching singlet underneath, as suggested by the 'Match it up' sticker.

Others defended the shrug as a bolero, a type of short jacket that can be worn over a top, dress, or jumpsuit.

One woman explained, 'I have so many of these and love adding them to a fit. It's more of an outfit complement than a stand-alone top since it's not heavy on coverage, but trust me, it's cute when styled right!'

'I'll admit, this particular one you attached, its unique style can be a puzzle with all the holes and the off-white colour, but it would vibe well with a bikini or matching shorts/skirts, paired with a classic black or white tee.'

Another commented that they bought the Kmart shrug, which was marked down to $5. They used it on nights out with body suits, jumpsuits, and singlets.

While this Kmart shrug is a controversial one, most of its items are a bargain for shoppers as they are ‘dupes’ for some high-end ones. Just like Kmart’s Jana Trapeze, shoppers said that this $15 handbag is the ‘perfect dupe’ for the Jacquemus Le Bambino leather tote, which costs over $1285.

Another Kmart item is the Satin Cami and Pants Pyjama, which has been hailed as a must-have with its saint luxurious feel at a price point of $22.

I quite like it. It 's quirky. If you are young enough and have the right shape for it - you go girl!

Give the old farts a big smile while you're at it!
I represent that statement. I'll admit that I am a perv. A few weeks ago, a beautiful young thing was with a older fellow and she caught more than my attention. He said "Why are you looking at my granddaughter like that!?" I replied "I like what I'm looking at and if you don't want anybody to look at her, tell her to dress in a hessian sack!" He shut up quick smart!

Oh now you are just wanting to get a rise out of me!

Well, I know I didn't offend you Vege...but to the others - that wasn't meant as offence, we are all old farts to the younger generation. I'm sure we all did things that displeased / shocked our parents or grandparents and I'm sure we all rolled our eyes ... it is a right of passage for youth. We weren't born at age 50! My mother wasn't happy that I didn't wear stockings when I was dressed formally...she got over it eventually!

To offend me would be a difficult task. It would have be a deeply personal barb of which members of SDC would know nothing about. in saying that, I'm my own harshest critic. @Knell you're a great contributor and have my highest respect. Too bad some others are stuck in the 19th century with Queen Victoria adorning their living room walls. :ROFLMAO:

Absolute rubbish! Not worth a Bent Penny! How much for this scrap of crap from China?
Better to learn to knit properly, and make it yourself if you must have it - but why would you?🫨

Cheers...I just talk crap most of the time and an unfortunate trait of mine is to be a bit objectivist, just for the sake of it sometimes (talk without thinking). I usually don't mean to be offensive - call it a personality disorder lol. I think it comes from living with my Millennials. I'm pretty sure I stopped teaching them things around year 12 - they now slap me around the ears by way of constantly challenging me (a big work in progress however) - they are way smarter than many give them credit for despite their youthfulness. On balance, I think they are better humans in many ways. Took me a while to understand that their independent thinking is a very good quality. They will do it their way and I am happy about that - it's their time. Anyway - love you all!

YUK YUK. I wouldn't give it yard room but then again I just don't understand why younger people wear clothes that have holes and rips in them. When I was much younger I wouldn't even be allowed out the front door in them. The only place you could wear them was working in the backyard or into the RAGBAG. A young girl told me she'd paid $180 for her jeans. I offered her 6 pairs if she came to my place in half an hour and she could have what I'd give her for nothing. Asked why free, I told her I'd buy the jeans from the op shop and cut/rip the holes myself. She did a dummyspit and stormed off.
Agre. Real ugly

Did we all swing into bikinis and mini skirts? When I look back at old photos, I think the 70s/80's were quite possibly the worst fashion styles.

Might I suggest that you wear something additional with it.....like a large sized Black plastic garbage bag with one of those self attached yellow draw string ties that you could tie off at the waist. Just to finish the look right OFF.!!.......Any way as I said it's just a suggestion to complete the ugliness of the top. 🤔😱😲😉

I think this looks a bit slutty with all the flesh showing. Would be liked by the younger generation l'm sure but any lady with some self respect would give it a wide miss.
Wow. Quite a disgusting comment. Toxic male attitude...much!

All's OK. I had a serious confrontation with a Dandenong goose a few days ago that was an inch away from becoming physical. Don't know why, but I am still seething profusely at the mere thought of it.
Did this Goose have feathers?
