This supermarket grape hack ‘feels’ illegal’ but might just save you a few bucks!
We members of the SDC are always on the lookout for ways to save a dollar or two. After all, every cent counts when you're retired!
That's why we were interested to hear about a recent hack that's been making the rounds online, specifically among Australian supermarket shoppers.
The so-called 'grape hack' was shared by TikTok user Adrian Widjy, who revealed that instead of having to purchase an entire bag of grapes (which can often be more than you need), you can actually just buy however many grapes you want. And apparently, this is perfectly legal despite feeling a bit strange to do!
In his video, which has since gone viral with over 1 million views, Widjy shows how he was able to purchase just a small handful of grapes from his local store. He even asked staff members if this was allowed first, and they confirmed that it was perfectly fine. Needless to say, many viewers were shocked by this revelation.
'Did you know this? You are allowed to buy the amount you need instead of the whole allocated bag,' Adrian captioned the video. 'I had to make sure and ask [the staff] if I could do this and they told me 100% [I could].'
Many commenters said they felt like they had been 'doing something illegal' all these years by not purchasing an entire bag of grapes whenever they wanted just a few pieces of fruit. Others said this hack would be especially useful for those occasions when you're entertaining guests and putting together a fruit platter or charcuterie board.

'I feel like this is illegal! But I actually love this because who eats the entire bag?' one user wrote in the comments.
'This is a game-changer for me when I make a charcuterie board. I only want like five grapes.' said another.
'OMG, I did this the other day and I felt like a criminal. But they let me buy it.' a third added.
Other shoppers couldn't believe people didn't know this was allowed, saying that they have always been doing it without a problem.
'I feel sorry for the people who haven't already been doing this!' one person commented. 'I couldn't imagine buying the entire bag!'
'I can't believe people don't know this. I've been doing it my whole life.' said another.
'I thought this was common knowledge. I also do it with cherries.' a third wrote.
It is absolutely legal and often the bags are heavier than intended by staff from others using this hack. Don’t get stuck with the short end of the stick – take what you need and keep the rest of your hard-earned money.
Earlier this month, shoppers were taken aback by another tip that drastically increased the convenience of their grocery shopping experience.
A woman shared on TikTok that she organises her grocery bags and groceries at the checkout so the cashier knows which bag she wants each item to go in.

Well members, there you have it! The next time you're at the supermarket, remember that you don't have to purchase an entire bag of grapes if you only want a few. And if you're feeling really organised, you can even sort your bags at the checkout so the cashier knows which items go in which bag.
