This delivery driver has driven his 1993 Toyota Corolla an unbelievable 2 MILLION kilometres - and he's not done yet!

Sometimes, we can be quick to judge a book by its cover - or in this case, a car by its age. In the world of motoring, newer always isn’t necessarily better; sometimes, aged classics can be just as reliable and useful as the latest model on showroom floors.

That’s certainly been true for Graeme Hebley, a 72-year-old newspaper delivery driver from New Zealand who bought his 1993 Toyota Corolla back in 2000 with 80,000 kilometres clocked up.

But since then? The odometer has spun faster than ever before, and - believe it or not – two million kilometres later: that same engine is still purring along bustling highways like it's a piece of cake!

What’s most impressive is that despite its age (at 27 years), Mr Hebley’s Corolla runs smoothly day after day like clockwork — it still uses its original engine and transmission too!

To make sure everything stays intact, Mr Hebley gets his beloved motor serviced at the Guthrie's Auto Care garage in Whanganui every other week without fail, making sure no corner is cut when it comes down to maintenance payments either.

When asked about having seen any similar cars reach such distances before, John Sherman, the car's mechanic, admitted: 'If I hadn't worked on it, I wouldn't believe it. I wouldn't believe it could do two million without something going wrong.'

Throughout his entire career, he said he had never seen anything come close to the Corolla's mileage. He recalled a car that had done 700,000 kilometres but that was still far behind.

Now that goes beyond impressive. It says so much about what can be achieved if a motor vehicle receives love and proper care whenever required… Case in point is Graeme Hebley, who loves this car model so much he believes ‘it will run forever' - he even joked his car might outlive him too!
Key Takeaways

  • Graeme Hebley has managed to run his 1993 Toyota Corolla to a remarkable two million kilometres, with the car still running efficiently.
  • This was achieved due to Mr Hebley's long-term job as a newspaper delivery contractor, as he drives from city to city, 6 days a week.
  • He also gets his car serviced every two weeks and has constant maintenance, which has contributed to the incredible milestone.
  • Despite being 72, Mr Hebley plans to keep driving the car, believing it might outlive him.

it is the easiest thing in the world to do, if you look after your equipment no mater what it be, It will look after you....and that includes oneself... Simples

No, surprise really. Good maintenance and proper driving (I'm not referring to chugging along. Purposeful driving is the key). I was always a Holden driver. Though in 2017, my parked Commodore, was written off by a drunk driver. So I had the dilemma of finding a new car quickly. So I brought, a new Corolla. It was after the purchase, I realised my mum had owned a 67' model Corona (now known as Corolla). Wow, we had Cars, 50 years apart. Both Toyota's, white, with black interiors history repeats lol. So am I happy, too right, but I'll give the 2 million kilometre journey for others 🙂.

My trusty 2001 model Toyota Corolla has only recently turned over 200,000kms, so still has a l-o-n-g way to go to catch up! I’m also happy to vouch for the reliability of Toyotas. It hardly seems that long ago that we regarded everything that cam out of Japan as cheap and nasty imitations! How far they’ve since come!

Didn't think it possible to drive 2 million Ks in NZ he would have had to drive around the block 24hrs a day

Actually, my 1st car in the 1970's was a brand new Toyota Corolla coupe.
It was canary yellow with racing black stripes on the sides.
Absolutely loved it.
Those were the days when new cars were affordable for everybody.

Lots of late model falcon taxis had extreme high mileage on them maybe not 2 million miles but think some were getting towards 1 million klms and they were a lot younger models than 1993

I have a corolla 2015, don't think much of it. The cruise control set at 110 ranges between 93 and 125 not much control in that. The CVS system cuts in way too soon. I have taken it back more times to the dealer than it's worth. They keep saying the cruise control computer has a factory fault that Toyota won't fix until the next redesign. Apparently the CVS is normal, don't think so, thee engine races way too fast. The speedo shows 65 when I do 50, 130 at 110, nowhere near accurate. Next car will NOT be a Toyota.

I drive a 2011 Nissan Xtrail It had 10000 on the clock when we bought it. We drove it from west to east when we moved to NSW from WA and it is just about to click over to 80,000! That's what happens when you observe almost 3 years of lockdown!! In one year I only put on 800kms, trips to doctors and specialists only ;) :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Good on him.
Getting it serviced every 2 weeks is excessive, but presumably due to an oil issue or something else that he wants fixed regularly.
2 weeks may just be a rough estimate?
Doing the sums ... 2 million / 22 yrs / 26 fortnights = 3500km a fortnight, so yes does seem excessive.

I am happy for this Kiwi bloke and his trusty car and interested in how much care he takes; a genuine Good News story. What I can't understand, however, is pairing this story with a stock photo of a different car registered in Victoria? What's the point of that?

I have regretted trading in my Toyota, reversing is a pain in the modern cars, but my trusted car reversed without me driving it haha!!
I love my reverse & front cameras in my modern car. If not stock standard, you would be able to get them fitted by an auto electrician.

The Toyota Corona was manufactured between 1957 - 2001.
The Toyota Corolla first came on the market in 1966, to address the demand for a smaller, fuel-vehicle.

The secret is that taxis, and this blokes Toyota never get cold. Cold starts, short runs are what kills engines. Taxi's regularly get well over a million Km no matter the brand.

I agree. Excessive maybe. 22 years driving 1,920,000 kilometres. If he drove it 6 days a weeks with no holidays or days off. That is 6886 days total. Divide that into kilometres travelled. Equates to just under 279 kilometres a day. Dedication on a paper run in New Zealand 🙂
