With soaring grocery prices across Australia and more increases expected in the coming year, it’s no surprise that shoppers are feeling the pinch.
But for one lucky Coles customer in Perth, the savings were not only immediate but truly unbelievable.
The lucky shopper, who had been keeping an eye out for discounted items, posted proof of her bargain buy on the popular Markdown Addicts Facebook page.
The Coles customer went shopping at their Beldon store and emerged with almost $173.55 worth of meat for only $1.20.
In a photo she attached to her post, she revealed her haul which included four lamb shoulder roasts, all marked down from over $22 to as little as 15 cents each.
The bargain buyer also picked up Australian boneless gravy beef marked down to 6c, and chicken burger patties at only 10 cents per packet.
The shopper’s post was flooded with positive comments, most of them saying they’ve ‘never seen discounts like it’.
‘That’s insanely good, the best I’ve seen,’ one commented. And we have to agree, members! We’re also surprised at this huge markdown in price – it’s more than 99 per cent off!
Someone else said that this was one of the ‘best discounts’ they’d seen. ‘Hope you spent some of your savings on a lotto ticket,’ they joked.
Other shoppers were eager to know whether there was anything left in the store since they wanted to score a bargain for themselves. The shopper responded that it was just a matter of good timing and that the haul she bought was nearing its expiration date.
A spokesperson for Coles previously told reporters that supermarkets sometimes mark down products near their best-before date to ‘reduce wastage and offer value for money to shoppers’.
‘We know our customers love good value so when a product is near its best-before date we often mark it down so it can be enjoyed for a cheaper price instead of being wasted,’ the spokesperson explained.
He added that the markdowns do not have a set time ‘across all stores’. Since many factors impact when and why a store discounts its items, such as stock on hand, delivery schedules, and team member rostering.
However, many shoppers in the past have shared ‘hacks’ for grocery shopping, including the time and place they visited the store.
A year ago, one shopper shared that she saved $200 by shopping at a certain schedule to score her discounted haul. She said that when she shopped at her local Coles at 8 pm, she found that everything was marked down to 10 cents. She paid only $3.60 for her groceries.
Another Coles customer was able to purchase $215 worth of food items for only $10! She confirmed that she, too, went grocery shopping at 8 pm at her local store and found many discounted items. You can read more on that here.
However, one local Queenslander said that she was able to score $140 worth of meat for only $37 when she visited her local Coles late in the afternoon – at 3 pm to be exact. You can check out that story here.
Shoppers online have said that the best day to do grocery shopping at Coles is Wednesday, as shelves get fully stocked the night before and it also ensures you won’t miss out on any specials.
Alternatively, you can also score big savings when you sign up for loyalty programs offered by supermarkets. Many have personalised offers and provide cash discounts off your grocery shopping which can certainly help your wallet.
We guess your best bet for scoring deals is to visit Coles late in the afternoon to evening on a Wednesday. What about you, members? Have you had any luck finding any recently discounted items at the supermarket? Let us know in the comments below!
