This billionaire’s surprise giveaway has people asking: ‘Was it worth it?'

Acts of generosity often spark public interest—especially when they unfold in unexpected places and at just the right time.

A surprise appearance at Queensland shopping centres today quickly turned into a major event, drawing crowds and creating buzz as one well-known figure made a remarkable gesture during a difficult economic climate.

What followed was a whirlwind day of giveaways, grateful recipients, and an announcement that has people in another state already preparing for what's next.

A Queensland shopping trip turned into a memorable occasion for hundreds of Australians on 9 April, as billionaire Adrian Portelli surprised locals with an enormous gift card giveaway.

Eager shoppers formed queues at Coles Nerang on the Gold Coast from as early as 7:00 am, hoping to score one of the $200 supermarket gift cards.

Portelli’s unexpected appearance drew a crowd that quickly grew, with lines stretching outside the centre as word spread.

One woman said: ‘Was it worth it? Oh, my word it was worth it.’

‘I would’ve been here at 7:00 am if I could get here,’ she added.

Even those who arrived closer to 9:00 am still managed to get their hands on a gift card.

After Nerang, the giveaway continued at Coles Redbank Plaza, where more people gathered hoping for a chance to benefit.

‘We’re all doing it tough, all of us, so he’s come at the right time,’ said one grateful shopper.

‘It means a lot on a pension, disability pension, it doesn’t go far enough. Now I can lavish out for Easter, I guess, for the grandchildren and the great grandchildren,’ another recipient said.

Portelli estimated he gave away around $140,000 worth of gift cards during the day, all in an effort to ease the financial strain many are currently facing.

‘People are doing it tough out there, so if you’ve got the means to do it, you might as well,’ he shared.

He later took to social media to announce the next stop on his giveaway tour—Coles at Lismore Square Shopping Centre in northern New South Wales at 10:00 am on 10 April.

Crowds and cameras alike followed his every move, with many applauding the timing of the gesture as families prepared for Easter.
