This 56-year-old TV star is an unexpected new mum

Is age really just a number? For TV star Claudia Raia, that seems to be the case. Because when she was advised to take a pregnancy test, the 56-year-old thought that her doctor was crazy.

So, imagine her surprise when the test came back positive!

Late last year, Brazilian actress Claudia Raia announced that she was pregnant with her first child from her marriage to fellow actor, Jarbas Homem de Mello – her partner for over three years.

She broke the news to the public through a post on Instagram, where she shared a clip where she appeared to be tap-dancing next to her husband before pointing to her belly, indicating that she was pregnant.

‘Our dream of becoming parents is nothing new,’ she captioned.

She even displayed the pregnancy test which indicated that she was three weeks into her pregnancy.

Claudia is already a mum to 25-year-old Enzo Celulari and 19-year-old Sophia Raia, two children she had from her 17-year marriage to actor Edson Celulari.

Now, the actress has given birth to her third child – baby Luca – in a maternity hospital in Sao Paulo on 11 February. Claudia posted photos of her child snuggled in between her and her husband – much to the delight of her 8.5 million followers.

‘Luca arrived, lighting up Saturday night!’ She wrote.

‘The world, since then, has had a new makeover for our family. We are overflowing with happiness and love! Welcome, Luca!’ The actress continued.

In her stories, Claudia recalled how she discovered the arrival of baby Luca. She confided that she called her doctor ‘crazy’ when she was ordered to take a blood test.

‘Guys, you saw the news of the year in my feed…When the doctor asked me for a beta-hCG, the pregnancy blood test, I said: “Love, you’re really crazy. Where did you get this from? I’m 55 years old.” Then she said: “But I need to investigate because all your rates are different, they are strange,”’ Claudia explained.

She further stated that she couldn’t stand not knowing, so she went and bought a pregnancy test. ‘I couldn’t stand it, I had to take the test,’ she added before mentioning that she didn’t really want to wait a day and a half for the blood test to come back.

‘Then I took the test and found out that I was more than 3 weeks pregnant. I said: “It cannot be. I’m 55 years old.” Claudia said she knew that the pregnancy was going to drive her crazy because she knew that having a baby at her age would be difficult.

The results from the doctor came back and confirmed that she was, indeed, pregnant.

Although it is rare for women over the age of 50 to become pregnant naturally, with the advances in assisted reproductive technology, it has become increasingly more common.

In 2021, an Indian woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy – at the age of 70. Jivunben Rabari welcomed her son through In Vitro Fertilisation or IVF, a method that can be effective even after menopause.

After being married for over 45 years, Rabari and her husband Maldhari (who is 75) shared that they were unsuccessful in conceiving a baby for decades. They then decided to go through the process of IVF, where an egg donated by a younger woman is fertilised outside of the body.

‘This is one of the rarest cases I have ever seen,’ the couple’s doctor explained. You can read more details about their story here.

According to other women who have shared their experience with IVF, the process felt ‘surreal’.

One woman had reservations about the procedure because she was worried that the baby wouldn’t be ‘hers’ entirely. ‘I was thinking, would she look like me? Would she have my nose? My hair colour?’ She stated.

But then her doctor started talking about how, when you carry a baby, its behaviour and personality was shaped entirely during the pregnancy. And this is what led her to go ahead with the process. But then there was an egg donor and sperm donor to choose from.

‘You do it all online and it seems a bit surreal, and yes, you do think you’re playing God. These two people will never meet, never know one another, and together their cells will create a baby – your baby,’ she admitted.

There’s also a ‘fog’ around the subject of artificial conception since a lot of women feel like it’s still a taboo subject. Nina Barnsley, the Director of the Donor Conception Network, said: ‘Many older mothers feel they are up against it enough in terms of other people’s views, and being open about this would be something else to criticise them for.’

Meanwhile, celebrities who are older than 50 are often coy about how they conceived their children. This gives rise to the misconception that people can easily postpone pregnancy until their 50s or 60s.

‘As a society, we need to have a proper conversation,’ Ms Barnsley said.

‘The technology means it’s possible to have babies until we’re 75 – but is that what we want?’

It was different back then!! Children were different from today’s children.
It’s a generation of “Me, me, me” (not saying this is the way with your grandchildren) but the majority of kids today, don’t take a “no” for an answer. They want it and they want it now!!
Yep that's my 3 year old grandson, they were in Coles on Monday and within seconds he was missing and found in the toy isle. He had a bunch if toys in his hands and his mum said he could have 1 toy he said no he wanted 4 then ran off with them abd carried on do much my daughter started crying. My husband had to go to them. I told her he can't have something every time they go to the shop. I told her to buy small treats and give them at home to reward him. He plays on my daughter .
My daughter also has a 1 year old son and a 5 year old girl, and I know she has post natal depression that she has had since baby 2 and won't see a doctor

So sorry to hear about your daughter!! Parents today go through so much with the way society is trying to tell them the way to go. The so called experts are creating a next generation of spoiled children and the media doesn’t help either. Then, when the children grow up they blame parents for the way they behave and go about in life. It’s very sad, because children are individuals and only parents know how to deal with each one of them. It’s not a way fits all, there are a lot involved.
I hope that your daughter sees someone to help her. Mental health is such a big thing at the moment and unfortunately, to survive in this system we live, we need a way to cope. I have suffer depression since 1995 and only medication helps me to go on and of course and most of all, my relationship with God. I couldn’t do it on my own 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I have suffered severe depression and anxiety for going onto 3 years. I am also on meds Ecitalopram most days it feels like it's doing nothing.
The positive thing with me suffering from these is that I realised my daughter also was suffering. I made an appointment with our DR for her but she cancelled yesterday.
God is the only thing I draw strength from, I was so low a little while ago I was looking at ending my life but my belief in God stopped me . 🙏

He’s my strength and might also. I believe that most of people today are going through some trials, how can they cope if they don’t have God in their lives??
I hope you get some relief and things turn out better for you and also to your daughter. Keep safe!! 💕💕

There’s plenty of people that have babies, so they have someone to look after them when they get old. I think that’s selfish. Other couples have babies to save their marriage. I think that’s selfish. Lots of people have babies to validate themselves. I think that’s selfish. Other people have babies to live their own dreams through. I think that selfish. Then of course others have babies and abuse them rather than love them.

Sadly people have babies for all the wrong reasons.
Babies should come into this world being unconditionally loved and in return they will love you back.
My kids are always doing things for me which I love that they wabt to but feel bad as well.
I just found out that I have kidney disease caused by 2 years on antibiotics. 4 of my girls straight away said they will give me one of their kidneys if it comes to that. I told them thank you but no. I know I did something right when 12 of my 13 kids are so amazing, caring and very thoughtful. With each of my children I knew I was blessed as each one was born

My mother was 46.5 years when she gave birth to me and dad was 48. Fortunately Mum had a wonderful doctor who saved us both against all odds. He didn’t believe at first Mum was pregnant and sent her away and told her to have more sense. When Mum had movements she returned to her doctor who almost fainted when he examined her and confirmed pregnancy. Only x-rays existed in the 40’s. People always referred to my mum as grandma. I had the best parents and I was spoilt with their love. Unfortunately my dad passed away suddenly when I was 14 so I had to leave school to be with mum. She became unwell and hospitalized for 2 months with every day a new diagnosis was made. I was able to stay with a good neighbour who took good care of me till Mum came home. I didn’t really have teenage years because I took on responsibilities far beyond my years. My mother died at 80 but she enjoyed her 2 grandchildren who were 10 and 7 at the time. I think IVF for women over is selfish because as we age you don’t have the energy to cope. I guess I am just old fashioned in my thinking because the world has changed so much.

Personal choice! Therefore no else’s business!. She, her husband and family have to deal with the future of their child. Babies don’t just happen - there are ways & means of conception - naturally, IVF etc. - whatever her choice it’s a responsibility they and only they have to deal with.

I dealt with three young children for months at a time while my husband was at sea - that was our choice, they were not ‘mistakes’, so please don’t judge others having children whether it was a choice to have ‘unmarried/or sex for pleasure ONLY’ then each one has accept the possible consequences. There are preventive measures, also each one’s choice. SO PLEASE DON’T JUDGE OTHERS. It’s none of your business!

No thank you, nappies, bottles, school runs, going through those teenage years when your in your 70’s with hip replacements…………… no way in the world, I love my grand children and my Great Grandbabies too much 🥰💕❤️

I’m 56 raising two surprise babies as I call them after being told in my late 30s that I would never be able to conceive, I already had 4 so fine with me, but here they are!! Having babies in my 40s was awesome. No I won’t probably be around for them in their older years as I am for my first four.. but the time we have together is precious.. I’m a better parent, in a better financial position,
And we enjoy every day we have together.. you never now when your going to go.. so age is irrelevant..I actually love having children in my life.. seems like a lot of the thread here is that children are seen as a burden..yuck what an awful way to view children..
I agree it is a horrible way to view children. If the ‘opposition’ to this and other ‘aged’ pregnancies is so horrible then the ‘yuck’ person should have taken her own precautions. It will be somewhat difficult to raise them as aging parents but it’s their personal choice and consequences each one has to deal with. With a second husband in Claudia’s case it looks like this is a welcome addition to her family. Enjoy your new baby & your other children Claudia.

Nature works in mysterious ways. In my Great & Grandmother's past it was called a menopausal baby. The only issue I see would be exhaustion from the hard work with babies at this age.

Yep, young or old, tomorrow cannot be guaranteed. So we should enjoy our families. Walk out of your front door & you could be ‘no more’. In an instant. So enjoy every day you have.

No it's not our business , but when a person makes something public then they should know they will get judged.

Would you not judge someone who abuses a child ?
People will judge someone who is over a certain age and who may not be able to give long term support to that child.
Is it fair a child or teenager is stuck taking care of a parent all because they chose to have a child at 55.

I know at 55 I couldn't do the same things I did at 35 or even 45

I was 42 when I had my youngest and I was in my best health physically and mentally.

Having a baby over 50 is plain selfish. Are you going to be able to keep up the same as younger parents?

How many years will you have with your kids let alone grandchildren?

Plus all the health issues that come with older pregnancy.

As for the 75 year old that belongs in a circus for the strange n weird.
That one is beyond selfish . Hope they had back up parents as they just made an orphan
But how was your child? Was your child born with a disability like I was. My parents, dad was 48.9 months and mum 42.7 months and I was born with neurofibromatosis type one NF1. It means that I was my NF1 is from spontaneous mutation. I have deformed bones in my left leg, tumors everywhere and I could not have children because it's now 'genetic' and I did not want to be disgustingly selfish and thoughtless like they were. On top of that, my mum fell pregnant again after me about aged 44-45. Maybe even pregnant 2-3 times after me. Plus, yes a plus... I'm the youngest of 9 children. Plus, she knew or should I say admitted that she was pregnant at least 12 times and that's of the times she knew she was pregnant and miscarried. I can only imagine how disabled those other siblings would have been. Thank Goodness they were not born. My selfish parents who took no precautions RUINED MY LIFE. A father who verbally abused me because of my disability, medical costs, cost of the calipers. A mother who only when twice to one of my specialist. Once when I was a baby and the other when I was 15 and all because she was doing touch shop at my brother's high school that day, otherwise she would not have been there. Imagine any parent Not Bothered to spend 15 hours at most in your child's child-teenage years going to see the specialist and instead have the attitude that 'I'm not bothered.' I never married as well because of them. A lot of people with NF are alone today because of rejection. I curse them every day now and especially when I'm in horrific pain and as far as I'm concerned, they deserve my curses.

People that risk having a child at a late age using their egg and yes even sperm can cause the child to be born with a disability and also a terrible genetic disease from spontaneous mutation in that it starts with them and can be passed on to their children and then grandchildren ..etc..

NO .... she should not have had that baby and SELFISH & THOUGHTLESS, along with Insidious Narcissistics conceited, ... just a few choice words... Add to that .. How was her child? Was the child born with a disability like I was. My parents, dad was 48.9 months and mum 42.7 months and I was born with neurofibromatosis type one NF1. It means that I my NF1 is from spontaneous mutation. A father who verbally abused me because of my disability, medical costs, cost of the calipers. A mother who only went twice to one of my specialist.
