The shocking price of this city’s 'most expensive pie' has Aussies divided

The humble meat pie is a staple in Australian cuisine, a comfort food that conjures up images of local footy games, family gatherings, and quick lunch breaks.

But how much would you be willing to fork out for this iconic Aussie dish?

In the heart of a major city, a bakery has taken the meat pie to new heights, both in terms of culinary craftsmanship and price, sparking a fiery debate among pastry aficionados and casual consumers alike.

Lode Pies and Pastries, nestled in the trendy Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, has been serving up an opulent version of the meat pie that commands a pricey sum of $20.

Enthusiasts point out that this isn't your average service station fare; the pie is a labour of love, taking three days to craft.

It features layers of delicate, flaky pastry and is filled with wagyu brisket, carrot, and sliced shiitake mushrooms. To top it off, a 'chimney' adorns the pie, allowing customers to pour in a rich chicken sauce, adding to the luxurious experience.

But for all its bells and whistles, the meat pie’s price tag has ignited a heated debate on social media, with a Facebook post drawing comments from those who decry the cost as 'absurd' and others who defend the pie as a 'work of art' that's worth every cent.

Customer Chris, who shared his discovery in a popular Facebook group, exclaimed, 'I think I've found the most expensive pie in New South Wales.'

Opinions on the pie's value for money are as varied as the layers within the pastry itself. Some argue that the intricate design and time investment justify the cost. 'I can see why it's $20, the way all the pastry is set would take ages,' one commenter observed.

Another patron praised the pie as 'one of the best pies you'll have in your life,' citing the 'fluffy pastry perfection and the amazing filling.'

On the other side of the crust, some remain sceptical. 'I want the hand of the Good Lord himself to have rolled the pastry before I pay $20 for a pie,' quipped a critic.

Others pointed out that while the pie may be a 'thing of beauty’, they would prefer a more traditional, and less expensive, chunky steak and pepper pie.

Gravy beef (Shin) slow cooked, is also great in a pie (but the price has increased dramatically).

I would only try it if someone else paid for it, or went halves in it with me. As a pensioner, I cannot even think about paying $20 for a meat pie, no matter how good it is, sorry
