The Phantom Comics!​

‘When Phantom moves, lightning stands still.’ Now that’s a line that takes you straight back, eh? For so many Aussies, The Phantom wasn’t just a comic; it was the comic. Created back in 1936 by Lee Falk, the purple-clad hero quickly became a cult favourite Down Under. It was so popular that you used to find the comics on liquorice bags, too!

Back in the day, lots of us kids liked comics. I wasn’t a big fan of the phantom but think I still might have one in my collection.

I did from the early 70's. In fact my collection of Phantoms runs for some 300's up to the current issue and numbers about 2000+ issues now in my collection

Yep, I certainly did read the Phantom. The newsagent at Charters Towers would deliver it weekly with my Telegraph and Courier Mail.

When I moved into our over 50's Lifestyle Village back in 2013 I had 2 containers full of Phantom comics that I had collected. Sold them on Market Place to a young enthusiast in Brisbane. More or less gave them away, didn't get anywhere near their worth. Used to drop into the local newsagent Friday mornings pick up the latest copy.

When I was young my parents took my sister and I to dance classes. I preferred for dad to take us because he ALWAYS bought us the latest Phantom comic. Then read it to us on the train home. Best train ride ever.

The only Phantom comics I had were the ones in showbags from the Royal Easter Show in the late 1960s.

I'm quite sure I never read them.

Well before the 60 I think ... I read what I cconsidered the first Phantom comic. It related the tale of how the phantom came to be... If I remember correcctly, a ship he was on was attacked by PIRATES... He swam ashore and found some material to make his costume from ...then he found Skull cave and lit a fire and holding a skull in his right hand which he swore oath on to destroy all pirates in that sea and districct. .. he made a ring and shaped the face of it ..into a skull as that was the face appearance of his cave home. I think Devil survived the shipwreck and came ashore with the first phamtom .. Named Kit Walker ... then his son made the ssame oath and Devil had pups to a girl dog and the dogs were named Devil too.
Kit Walker's girlfriend was Diana Palmer ... and they had a boy also named Kit.
The second Kit Walker is the one the comics followed .. He found a pair of sunglasses and a Dick Tracey style hat, Coat and shoes., which he wore when visiting Diana in lNew York.
The Phantom ( The Ghost who Walks) I love that saying... I also bought a Phantom ring which I would dab it on a inking pad then plant the phantom skull on the jaw of my mates LOL ...They still ltalk to me after about 70 years ..( that is the ones that are still alivee) bur the phantom IS still living with Diana and their son "KIT" in skul cave along the east coast of South Africa. TRUE JUST ASK ME..
The Phantins friend and "BUTLER" was Guram from the Bandar tribe in the Gangalla forest.
